Balogun brace powers USMNT past Paraguay in FIFA World Cup 2026 opener

The United States could hardly have imagined a better start to their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign.
Backed by a passionate home crowd of more than 70,000 fans at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, Mauricio Pochettino's side overwhelmed Paraguay 4-1 to launch their Group D journey in emphatic fashion.
Led by a sensational first-half display from Christian Pulisic and a clinical brace from Folarin Balogun, the Americans produced one of their most complete World Cup performances in decades.
The victory represents the United States' biggest World Cup winning margin since the inaugural tournament in 1930 and immediately establishes them as one of the teams to watch in the competition.
Damian Bobadilla's own goal sets the tone
The match was effectively decided before halftime. The Americans exploded out of the blocks and were rewarded early when Paraguay turned the ball into their own net following sustained pressure from Pulisic and the U.S. attack.
The breakthrough only increased the confidence flowing through the home side. Pulisic, operating with freedom and creativity, constantly found gaps in Paraguay's defence. His movement and passing caused problems throughout the opening half, while midfielders Weston McKennie, Tyler Adams and Malik Tillman controlled possession.
Balogun doubled the lead with a composed finish after being expertly found by Pulisic. After having another effort ruled out for offside, the Monaco striker responded by producing one of the goals of the tournament so far, blasting a powerful strike into the top corner to make it 3-0 before halftime.
Pulisic shines before injury concern
While Balogun grabbed the headlines with his goals, much of the attacking rhythm came from Pulisic. The AC Milan star looked at his creative best, assisting one goal and helping create another before being substituted at halftime.
After the match, Pulisic revealed he had suffered a knock to his left calf but stressed the substitution was largely precautionary. The update will be welcomed by U.S. supporters, with tougher tests still to come in the tournament.
"I am really hoping it's nothing," Pulisic told reporters after the match. The injury remains the only negative from an otherwise perfect evening for the hosts.
Balogun announces himself on the biggest stage
The performance marked Balogun's finest moment yet in a United States shirt. Playing in his first World Cup, the striker showcased the finishing ability that convinced the U.S. Soccer Federation to secure his international allegiance.
His movement stretched Paraguay's back line repeatedly, while his second goal highlighted the composure and confidence of a player entering his prime years. Balogun became the first American player to score twice in a World Cup match since the tournament's inaugural edition in 1930.
Paraguay outclassed
Paraguay entered the tournament with plenty of confidence after impressive qualifying performances against South American heavyweights Brazil and Argentina.
However, they struggled to cope with the speed, intensity and technical quality of the United States. Miguel Almirón and his teammates attempted to rally after halftime, but the damage had already been done.
Maurício eventually scored a consolation goal in the 73rd minute, but it did little to change the outcome. Substitute Giovanni Reyna then produced a stunning late finish to restore the three-goal advantage and complete a memorable night for the hosts.
Pochettino delighted with performance
Head coach Mauricio Pochettino praised both the players and supporters after the match. The Argentine manager described the opening 45 minutes as one of the strongest performances he has witnessed from the national team.
The atmosphere inside SoFi Stadium also impressed the former Tottenham and Paris Saint-Germain boss. With momentum now firmly on their side, the United States will look to build on this result as they continue their quest for a deep World Cup run on home soil.
What it means for Group D
The victory puts the United States in a strong early position in Group D. A three-point start, combined with an impressive goal difference, gives Pochettino's team valuable breathing room heading into their next fixture.
Most importantly, the performance demonstrated that this American side possesses the attacking quality and confidence needed to compete with some of the world's best teams. If Friday's display is any indication, the United States may be capable of much more than simply advancing from the group stage.
