Cyle Larin saves Canada in 1-1 draw with Bosnia at World Cup opener

Canada avoided heartbreak in front of a packed home crowd in Toronto as substitute Cyle Larin scored a crucial second-half equaliser to secure a 1-1 draw against Bosnia and Herzegovina in their opening Group B match at the FIFA World Cup 2026.

The result may only be worth one point in the standings, but for Canadian football, it represents a landmark achievement. After losing all six matches across their previous World Cup appearances in 1986 and 2022, Canada finally claimed their first point on football's biggest stage.

The draw also ensured Jesse Marsch's side avoided becoming only the second host nation in World Cup history to lose its opening match.

Bosnia strike first after Canada waste chances

Canada began brightly and created the better opportunities throughout much of the contest, but familiar issues in front of goal nearly proved costly. The hosts had a golden chance to take the lead when Jonathan David found himself through on goal. However, the striker failed to convert, firing directly at Bosnia goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj.

Moments later, Canada were punished. Bosnia and Herzegovina capitalised on a set-piece situation as Jovo Lukić rose highest inside the penalty area to guide a header into the net following excellent delivery from a corner kick.

The goal silenced the Toronto crowd and handed Bosnia a valuable advantage despite Canada controlling large periods of possession.

Larin changes the match

As time ticked away, Canada looked increasingly frustrated. Jesse Marsch responded by introducing veteran striker Cyle Larin from the bench, a substitution that would ultimately change the game.

With less than 15 minutes remaining, Larin made an immediate impact. After excellent work from fellow substitute Promise David, the experienced forward controlled the ball inside the box before firing a shot that took a slight deflection on its way into the net.

The equaliser sparked huge celebrations inside Toronto Stadium and reignited Canadian belief.

Larin nearly completed a dramatic comeback moments later. Presented with a late opportunity deep into stoppage time, the striker appeared set to score the winner before Bosnian defender Tarik Muharemović produced a crucial last-ditch block.

Historic point for Canada

While Canada will be disappointed not to claim all three points after dominating long stretches of the match, the draw remains a significant milestone. The result ends a run of six straight World Cup defeats and gives Canada their first point in tournament history.

It also marks the first time a World Cup host nation has drawn its opening match since South Africa's 1-1 result against Mexico in the 2010 tournament.

With Switzerland and Qatar still to come in Group B, Canada remain firmly in contention for qualification to the knockout stages.

Key Performers

Cyle Larin

The substitute delivered exactly what Canada needed. His equaliser preserved an important point and highlighted his value as one of Canada's most experienced attacking players.

Maxime Crépeau

The goalkeeper made a crucial second-half save to deny Ermedin Demirović in a one-on-one situation, keeping Canada within touching distance.

Ismaël Koné

One of Canada's brightest performers in midfield, driving the team forward and helping create the move that led to the equaliser.

Jovo Lukić

Bosnia's standout attacking threat. His well-taken header looked set to secure a famous victory before Canada's late response.

What it means for Group B

The draw leaves both nations with one point after the opening round of fixtures. Canada will now turn their attention toward a crucial clash against Switzerland, while Bosnia and Herzegovina prepare for another difficult challenge as they continue their pursuit of a first-ever World Cup knockout-stage appearance.

For Canada, however, the biggest takeaway is simple: World Cup history has finally been made.
