Khoukhi's late header gives Qatar first-ever World Cup point

Qatar produced one of the biggest moments in their football history after captain Boualem Khoukhi headed home a dramatic stoppage-time equaliser to rescue a 1-1 draw against Switzerland in Group B of the FIFA World Cup 2026.
The result handed the Gulf nation its first-ever point at a FIFA World Cup, four years after a disappointing home campaign in Qatar 2022 ended without a single point.
Playing at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California, Julen Lopetegui's side refused to surrender despite spending much of the contest under pressure from a dominant Swiss team.
Switzerland dominate but fail to finish
Switzerland looked set to begin their tournament with all three points after Breel Embolo converted a first-half penalty. The spot kick was awarded after Qatar goalkeeper Mahmoud Abunada brought down Remo Freuler inside the penalty area.
Embolo calmly converted from the spot in the 17th minute, giving Murat Yakin's side the lead after a lengthy VAR review confirmed the decision. From that point, Switzerland controlled large periods of possession and repeatedly threatened to extend their advantage.
The Europeans finished with 26 attempts on goal compared to Qatar's seven but were left frustrated by missed opportunities and resilient defending.
Dan Ndoye, Michel Aebischer and Ermedin Demirović all came close, while Qatar goalkeeper Abunada recovered well after conceding the penalty to produce several important saves.
Khoukhi delivers historic moment
With time running out, Qatar continued pushing forward in search of an equaliser. Their persistence was rewarded in the 94th minute.
Homam Ahmed whipped an inviting cross into the penalty area, where captain Boualem Khoukhi rose highest to power a header beyond Gregor Kobel and spark wild celebrations among the Qatar players, coaching staff and travelling supporters.
The dramatic finish ensured Qatar avoided defeat and secured the nation's first-ever FIFA World Cup point. The milestone comes after Qatar lost all three matches during their debut appearance at the 2022 World Cup.
Lopetegui praises Qatar's Character
Qatar head coach Julen Lopetegui hailed his players' determination after the final whistle. The Spaniard, taking charge of Qatar at his first FIFA World Cup, praised the resilience shown by his side against one of Europe's strongest teams.
The result leaves Group B perfectly balanced after Canada and Bosnia & Herzegovina also played out a 1-1 draw earlier in the day. All four teams now sit on one point after the opening round of fixtures.
Group B Wide Open
Switzerland will feel they missed an opportunity to seize early control of the group after failing to capitalise on their dominance. Despite creating numerous chances, they were unable to find a decisive second goal and paid the price deep into stoppage time.
Qatar, meanwhile, now have genuine belief heading into their next group-stage fixture after claiming the biggest result in the nation's World Cup history.
