South Korea fight back to defeat Czech Republic 2-1 in World Cup 2026 Opener

South Korea launched their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign with a spirited 2-1 comeback victory over the Czech Republic in Guadalajara, overcoming an early second-half setback to claim three valuable points in Group A.

Inspired by midfielder Hwang In-beom, who scored the equaliser before setting up the winning goal, the Koreans responded impressively after falling behind to Ladislav Krejci's header and now sit level on points with co-hosts Mexico at the top of the group.

The victory gives South Korea early momentum ahead of a crucial clash with Mexico, while the Czech Republic face immediate pressure heading into their next match against South Africa.

Contrasting styles define opening contest

The encounter showcased two distinctly different footballing approaches. South Korea relied on technical quality, quick passing combinations and movement between the lines, while the Czech Republic attempted to dominate through physicality, aerial strength and direct attacking play.

The European side looked particularly dangerous from set pieces and long throws throughout the evening, creating problems for the Korean defence.

Despite several opportunities, neither side found the breakthrough during a competitive first half.

Son Heung-min endures frustrating night

Much of South Korea's attacking responsibility fell on captain Son Heung-min. The experienced forward was heavily involved throughout the opening period and generated several promising opportunities.

However, despite registering five first-half attempts, Son was unable to find the finishing touch that has made him one of Asia's greatest footballers.

The Tottenham star remains two goals short of South Korea's all-time international scoring record and will hope to make a stronger impact in the team's upcoming fixtures.

Krejci gives Czech Republic the lead

The match burst into life after halftime. The Czech Republic capitalised on one of their greatest strengths in the 59th minute when defender Ladislav Krejci rose highest to power home a header following a long throw delivered into the penalty area.

The goal rewarded the Czech Republic's aerial dominance and appeared to put them in control of the contest.

Hwang In-beom sparks Korean comeback

South Korea responded with composure and quality. Just eight minutes after falling behind, Lee Kang-in produced a clever through ball that released Hwang In-beom in space.

The midfielder cut inside before curling a precise right-footed effort into the far corner to restore parity and ignite celebrations among the large Korean contingent inside the stadium.

The goal shifted momentum firmly in South Korea's favour.

Oh Hyeon-gyu delivers winning moment

With the game increasingly opening up, South Korea found the decisive breakthrough through substitute Oh Hyeon-gyu. The striker had replaced Son Heung-min and immediately provided fresh energy in attack.

Hwang turned creator, delivering a well-weighted pass that allowed Oh to finish confidently and complete the comeback. The goal proved decisive as South Korea held firm during the closing stages.

Czechia denied equaliser

The Czech Republic believed they had rescued a point when captain Tomas Soucek headed home from a set-piece situation. However, celebrations were cut short after the assistant referee raised the flag for offside.

The decision preserved South Korea's lead and ultimately secured all three points for the Asian side.

Group A Standings after Matchday One

Following the opening round of fixtures:

  1. Mexico – 3 points
  2. South Korea – 3 points
  3. Czech Republic – 0 points
  4. South Africa – 0 points

Mexico defeated South Africa 2-0 earlier in the day, meaning Group A already appears set up for a potentially decisive showdown between Mexico and South Korea.

South Korea will face co-hosts Mexico in one of the most anticipated Group A matches on June 18. A victory would place the Koreans in a commanding position to qualify for the knockout stage.

The Czech Republic, meanwhile, must bounce back quickly against South Africa if they hope to remain in contention for progression. With the expanded 48-team tournament allowing additional third-place teams to advance, every point could prove decisive in the race for the Round of 32.
