The FIFA World Cup 2026 officially has its first goal scorer, and the historic moment belongs to Mexico forward Julian Quiñones.

Playing in front of a passionate home crowd at the iconic Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, Quiñones fired Mexico into an early lead against South Africa in the opening match of the tournament, becoming the first player to find the net at football's biggest event.

Mexico dominate early stages

Following the goal, Mexico continued to dictate possession and tempo.

South Africa attempted to build attacks through short passing combinations and quick transitions, but Mexico's aggressive pressing and attacking intent limited opportunities for the African side during the opening exchanges.

The co-hosts looked energized by the atmosphere inside Estadio Azteca, controlling much of the early play as they searched for a second goal.

Opening Ceremony sets the stage

Before kickoff, fans were treated to a spectacular opening ceremony that officially launched the biggest World Cup in history.

Global music stars Burna Boy and Shakira headlined the celebrations, performing alongside a host of international artists in front of a packed stadium.

The ceremony highlighted the cultural diversity of the tournament and marked the beginning of a World Cup that spans Mexico, the United States and Canada. Their appearance added extra excitement to an already historic occasion as football fans around the globe tuned in for the opening match.
