FIFA World Cup 2026: Everything to know about the three opening ceremonies

The FIFA World Cup 2026 is set to make history as the first tournament hosted jointly by three nations, and the celebrations will begin in equally historic fashion.

For the first time, football's biggest event will feature three official opening ceremonies across Mexico, Canada, and the United States, reflecting the unique structure of a tournament spread across North America.

With the competition expanding to 48 teams and 104 matches, organizers are planning a series of entertainment spectacles designed to showcase the culture, music, and identity of each host nation before the opening round of matches.

The productions are being led by acclaimed Italian producer Marco Balich, known globally for directing major Olympic and international sporting ceremonies.

Shakira and Burna Boy set to perform the Official World Cup Anthem

Global music stars Shakira and Burna Boy are expected to play a central role in the FIFA World Cup 2026 celebrations, with reports indicating they will perform Dai Dai, the tournament's official song.

The collaboration would unite two of the world's biggest music acts, bringing together Latin pop and Afrobeats on football's biggest stage. Shakira's association with the World Cup stretches back to iconic performances such as Waka Waka (This Time for Africa) in 2010, while Burna Boy's global influence has helped elevate African music to unprecedented international heights.

Mexico Opening Ceremony

Mexico will host the first opening ceremony on June 11 at the iconic Estadio Azteca in Mexico City before the host nation's Group A encounter against South Africa.

The venue becomes the first stadium in history to host matches at three different FIFA World Cups, adding another layer of significance to the occasion. A lineup featuring some of Latin America's biggest stars is expected to energize the crowd, including Alejandro Fernández, Belinda, Danny Ocean, J Balvin, Lila Downs, Los Ángeles Azules, Maná, and Tyla.

The ceremony is expected to celebrate Mexican football heritage while highlighting the country's rich cultural influence across the region.

Canada Opening Ceremony

One day later, attention shifts north to Toronto, where Canada hosts its own opening celebration ahead of its match against Bosnia and Herzegovina at BMO Field.

Leading the entertainment lineup is Canadian music icon Michael Bublé, joined by several internationally recognized performers. Confirmed artists include Michael Bublé, Alessia Cara, Alanis Morissette, Elyanna, Vegedream, Jessie Reyez, Nora Fatehi, Sanjoy, William Prince.

The ceremony aims to showcase Canada's multicultural identity while celebrating the nation's growing influence on the global football stage.

United States Opening Ceremony

The final opening ceremony takes place at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles before the United States faces Paraguay. The American showcase features one of the strongest entertainment lineups of the tournament, headlined by global pop superstar Katy Perry.

Other performers include Future, Lisa (BLACKPINK), Rema, Anitta, Tyla.

The ceremony is expected to blend music, technology, and visual storytelling as the United States welcomes the world to one of the largest sporting events ever staged on its soil.

A New Era for World Cup Entertainment

Unlike previous editions of the tournament that featured a single opening ceremony, FIFA's decision to stage three separate celebrations reflects the unprecedented scale of the 2026 World Cup.

The tournament will span 16 host cities across three countries and is projected to attract billions of viewers worldwide.

With football, music and culture coming together across North America, the opening ceremonies will serve as the first chapter of what promises to be the biggest FIFA World Cup in history.

As fans prepare for kickoff, the combination of global superstars, historic venues and host-nation pride ensures the tournament will begin with an unforgettable celebration.
