FIFA World Cup 2026: USA reach last 16 with win over Bosnia

The United States booked their place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 with a determined 2-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina, overcoming the dismissal of star striker Folarin Balogun to keep their tournament dream alive.
Balogun continued his outstanding World Cup campaign by scoring his third goal before being shown a straight red card midway through the second half. Malik Tillman then produced a superb free-kick to secure qualification and send the Americans into a high-profile showdown with Belgium.
Bosnia start brightly
Despite the final scoreline, Bosnia and Herzegovina began the contest aggressively. Matt Freese was called into action inside the opening minutes, producing two important saves to deny Ermedin Demirović after a clever attacking move caught the American defence off guard.
Bosnia also threatened from set pieces, with Kerim Alajbegović coming close to opening the scoring directly from a corner. However, once the United States settled, the momentum shifted decisively.
Balogun delivers again
Folarin Balogun was at the heart of almost every dangerous American attack during the opening half. He had an early goal ruled out for offside, appealed unsuccessfully for penalties on two separate occasions and constantly stretched Bosnia's defensive line with intelligent movement.
His persistence was finally rewarded just before halftime.
Tim Ream intercepted a loose Bosnia clearance before Malik Tillman threaded an excellent pass into Balogun's path. The striker calmly slid his finish beyond Nikola Vasilj to hand the United States a deserved lead.
The goal was Balogun's third of the tournament, leaving him just one short of Bert Patenaude's long-standing record for most goals scored by an American player in a single FIFA World Cup.
He celebrated with his version of LeBron James' famous "Silencer" celebration, drawing an approving reaction from the NBA legend on social media.
Balogun almost doubled his tally before the interval, only to see his effort crash against the crossbar.
Red card creates late drama
The match took a dramatic turn in the 64th minute. Balogun was shown a straight red card following a heavy challenge on Tarik Muharemović, forcing the United States to defend the remainder of the contest with ten men.
Bosnia attempted to capitalize on their numerical advantage by pushing more players forward, but struggled to create meaningful openings against the disciplined American backline.
Tillman produces moment of quality
With Bosnia chasing an equaliser, space gradually opened up for the Americans. Their decisive second goal arrived in the 82nd minute.
Tillman stepped up to take a free-kick from just outside the penalty area and curled a powerful effort that beat Vasilj despite the goalkeeper getting a hand to the ball. The strike effectively ended Bosnia's hopes of mounting a comeback.
The victory gives the United States only their second-ever knockout victory in modern FIFA World Cup history. They previously reached the semifinals in the inaugural 1930 tournament before recording their famous Round of 16 victory over Mexico in 2002.
Now, playing on home soil, Mauricio Pochettino's side have another opportunity to make history when they face Belgium in Seattle. The result also ended a lengthy winless run against European opposition at the FIFA World Cup, marking the Americans' first victory over a European nation in the competition since defeating Portugal in 2002.
Bosnia exit with heads held high
Although their tournament comes to an end, Bosnia and Herzegovina can reflect positively on only their second FIFA World Cup appearance. A draw against Canada and victory over Qatar earned them a historic place in the knockout stage for the first time, highlighting the continued growth of the national team on the global stage.

The United States advance to the FIFA World Cup Round of 16, where they will face Belgium in one of the standout knockout fixtures.
