USA beat Australia 2-0 to reach World Cup knockout stage

The United States continued their impressive FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign by defeating Australia 2-0 in Seattle, becoming one of the first nations to secure qualification for the Round of 32.

Mauricio Pochettino's side followed up their convincing opening victory over Paraguay with another composed display, collecting six points from two Group D matches despite missing injured captain Christian Pulisic.

Early pressure pays off

The Americans settled quickly and were rewarded with an early breakthrough in the 11th minute.

Folarin Balogun surged down the left flank before delivering a dangerous cut-back into the penalty area. Under pressure from Ricardo Pepi, Australian defender Cameron Burgess inadvertently diverted the ball into his own net to hand the hosts the lead.

The own goal gave the United States confidence as they dominated possession, controlled the tempo and prevented Australia from establishing any attacking rhythm.

Alex Freeman doubles the advantage

The hosts extended their lead just before halftime through Alex Freeman. Following a cleverly worked free-kick routine, Sergiño Dest's effort was deflected high into the air inside the penalty area, allowing Freeman to react quickest with a well-timed header.

Although the assistant referee initially raised the offside flag, a VAR review confirmed the goal stood, sending the Seattle crowd into celebration. The goal marked Freeman's first FIFA World Cup strike and further highlighted the growing depth within Pochettino's youthful squad.

Australia improve after the break

Australia made several attacking substitutions at halftime and looked considerably more dangerous during the second period. Cristian Volpato, Connor Metcalfe and Nestory Irankunda all injected greater energy into the Socceroos' attack as they pushed higher in search of a comeback.

The United States, however, remained disciplined defensively.

Goalkeeper Matt Turner was rarely troubled, while defenders Chris Richards and Antonee Robinson helped repel Australia's late pressure. Despite several promising attacks, the Socceroos failed to break through as the American defence secured a second consecutive clean sheet.

Pochettino's tactical flexibility impresses

Without Christian Pulisic, Mauricio Pochettino adjusted his tactical setup by deploying a two-striker system featuring Balogun and Pepi.

The change proved effective, allowing the United States to stretch Australia's back line while creating additional space for midfielders Weston McKennie and Dest to dictate play.

The tactical flexibility demonstrated once again why the United States are emerging as one of the tournament's surprise contenders.

Knockout stage secured

The victory guarantees the United States a place in the knockout rounds with one group match still to play.

Attention now turns to their final Group D fixture against Turkey, where a positive result could secure top spot in the standings and potentially provide a more favourable Round of 32 opponent.

Backed by passionate home support and growing confidence, the Americans are beginning to believe a deep World Cup run could be within reach.

Player of the Match

Alex Freeman (USA)

Freeman delivered an outstanding all-round performance, capping it with his first World Cup goal. His intelligent movement, defensive work and decisive header helped the United States maintain momentum and secure qualification for the knockout stage.
