FIFA World Cup 2026: Jonathan David hat-trick fires Canada past Qatar

Canada delivered one of the standout performances of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after dismantling nine-man Qatar 6-0 in Vancouver, moving within touching distance of a historic place in the knockout rounds.

Jonathan David stole the headlines with a brilliant hat-trick as Jesse Marsch's side overwhelmed the Asian champions in front of an electric home crowd at BC Place.

The emphatic victory marked Canada's first-ever World Cup win and instantly became one of the nation's greatest football moments.

Canada start fast in front of home fans

The atmosphere inside BC Place reflected the magnitude of the occasion, with thousands of Canadian supporters creating a sea of red before kick-off. The hosts rewarded that energy with an aggressive start and opened the scoring after 16 minutes.

Jonathan David's effort was initially saved, but Cyle Larin reacted quickest to convert the rebound, becoming the first Canadian male player to score twice at a FIFA World Cup after also finding the net in the opening group match.

Canada continued to dominate possession, pressing Qatar relentlessly and forcing repeated defensive mistakes.

Jonathan David announces himself on the World Stage

David's performance transformed an already impressive display into a historic evening. The Juventus striker doubled Canada's advantage with a composed volley before adding another close-range finish just before halftime after Qatar had been reduced to ten men.

His third goal arrived deep into stoppage time to complete a memorable hat-trick, making him the first Canadian player to score three goals in a World Cup match.

The performance also reinforced his reputation as one of the tournament's most dangerous forwards after questions surrounding his club form heading into the competition.

Qatar collapse after two red cards

Qatar's evening quickly unravelled. Homam Ahmed received the first dismissal late in the opening half after bringing down a Canadian attacker as the last defender.

Things worsened after the interval when Assim Madibo was shown a red card following a VAR review for a dangerous challenge that left Canadian midfielder Ismael Koné with a serious leg injury.

The injury cast a shadow over Canada's celebrations, with Koné carried off on a stretcher before later being diagnosed with a broken leg. His replacement, Nathan Saliba, paid tribute by holding up Koné's shirt after scoring Canada's fourth goal from a stunning free-kick.

An own goal from Mohammad Al Mannai and David's late third completed the scoring.

Canada edge closer to knockout stage

The comprehensive victory leaves Canada in a commanding position in Group B ahead of a decisive meeting with Switzerland.

A draw in that fixture would be enough to guarantee top spot and send the co-hosts into the Round of 32, where they would remain in Vancouver for their knockout fixture.

For Jesse Marsch, the result represented far more than three points.

The American coach has repeatedly spoken about changing the perception of football in Canada, and Thursday's dominant display may prove to be a defining moment in the country's football history.

David headlines Canada's new generation

While Alphonso Davies remains Canada's biggest global star, Jonathan David reminded the football world why he is considered one of Europe's elite forwards.

His movement, finishing and composure constantly troubled Qatar's defence, while Canada's high-intensity pressing showcased the identity Marsch has worked to build.

With confidence soaring and knockout qualification now within reach, Canada have emerged as one of the tournament's most exciting stories. If they continue performing at this level, their World Cup journey may only be getting started.
