Switzerland storm past Bosnia to move closer to World Cup knockout stage

Switzerland took a significant step toward qualification for the knockout rounds of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after scoring four late goals to defeat Bosnia-Herzegovina 4-1 in an explosive Group B encounter.

What appeared destined to finish as a frustrating goalless draw transformed dramatically during the closing stages, with substitute Johan Manzambi emerging as the game's standout performer.

The Freiburg youngster scored twice, while Ruben Vargas and captain Granit Xhaka also found the net to hand Murat Yakin's side their first victory of the tournament.

Switzerland finally find the breakthrough

For much of the evening, Bosnia-Herzegovina frustrated the Swiss attack with disciplined defending and physical defending across the pitch. Switzerland controlled possession and created several promising situations, but struggled to convert their dominance into clear scoring opportunities.

The breakthrough finally arrived in the 74th minute.

Johan Manzambi, introduced from the bench to inject fresh energy into the attack, connected brilliantly with a bouncing ball to fire an outstanding volley beyond the Bosnian goalkeeper and finally reward Switzerland's persistence.

The goal completely changed the momentum of the contest.

Red card changes everything

Bosnia's hopes of mounting a comeback suffered a major setback only moments later. Defender Tarik Muharemovic received a straight red card after denying a clear goalscoring opportunity, reducing Bosnia to ten men during the decisive stages of the match.

Switzerland immediately took advantage of the numerical superiority.

Ruben Vargas doubled the lead after combining well with Breel Embolo before calmly finishing into the bottom corner. Manzambi then completed his memorable evening by scoring his second goal after another swift attacking move, effectively ending the contest.

Bosnia show spirit until the end

Despite the scoreline, Bosnia continued to fight. Substitute Ermin Mahmic produced one of the goals of the tournament so far in stoppage time, smashing a spectacular volley into the net from outside the penalty area to briefly reduce the deficit.

However, Switzerland had the final word. Deep into added time, VAR awarded the Swiss a penalty following a foul inside the area. Captain Granit Xhaka stepped forward and confidently converted from the spot to complete an impressive 4-1 victory.

Manzambi announces himself

The evening belonged to Johan Manzambi. The 20-year-old has enjoyed a breakthrough season with Bundesliga club Freiburg and continued that impressive rise with arguably the biggest performance of his young career.

Once a goalkeeper who admired German legend Manuel Neuer while growing up, Manzambi is now making headlines as one of Switzerland's brightest attacking talents. His movement, composure and finishing transformed the game after his introduction and may have secured him a starting place moving forward.

Switzerland close in on qualification

The victory moves Switzerland to the top of Group B with four points and places them in an excellent position to qualify for the Round of 32.

Their consistency at major tournaments has become one of European football's most underrated success stories, and Yakin's side are now chasing a seventh consecutive appearance in the knockout stages of a major international competition.

Bosnia-Herzegovina, meanwhile, face an uphill battle after suffering a damaging defeat despite remaining competitive for over 70 minutes. Switzerland will next face co-hosts Canada knowing another positive result could secure qualification for the knockout phase.
