FIFA World Cup 2026: Bosnia-Herzegovina beat Qatar 3-1 to boost knockout hopes

Bosnia-Herzegovina strengthened their hopes of reaching the FIFA World Cup knockout stage for the first time in their history after defeating Qatar 3-1 in their final Group B fixture.

The victory keeps Bosnia firmly in contention to qualify as one of the tournament's best third-placed teams while ending Qatar's campaign without a single victory. Having previously appeared only once at the World Cup in 2014, Bosnia now stand on the verge of making national history.

Teenager Alajbegović announces himself on the world stage

The breakthrough arrived midway through the opening half through one of Bosnia's brightest young talents. Eighteen-year-old Kerim Alajbegović unleashed a powerful strike from outside the penalty area that beat goalkeeper Mahmud Abunada at his near post, giving Bosnia a deserved lead.

The goal carried extra significance beyond the scoreboard, with Alajbegović becoming one of the youngest goalscorers in FIFA World Cup history. His composed finish highlighted the exciting generation beginning to emerge for Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Bosnia extend advantage before Qatar respond

Bosnia continued to dominate after taking the lead and doubled their advantage just five minutes later. Sead Kolašinac delivered an inviting cross toward the far post, where veteran striker Edin Džeko intelligently redirected the ball across goal.

Under pressure, Qatar defender Sultan Al-Brake inadvertently turned the ball into his own net. Despite struggling for long periods, Qatar found a route back into the contest before halftime.

Captain Hassan Al Haydos reduced the deficit with a well-taken finish, offering the Asian side hope heading into the second half.

Mahmić seals crucial victory

Qatar pushed forward after the restart in search of an equaliser but Bosnia remained disciplined defensively while looking dangerous on the counterattack. The decisive moment arrived ten minutes from full time.

Ermin Mahmić, who also scored earlier in the tournament against Switzerland, calmly finished to restore Bosnia's two-goal cushion and remove any remaining doubt over the result.

The late strike ensured Bosnia collected all three points and significantly improved their chances of progressing beyond the group stage.

Knockout qualification within reach

The expanded 48-team World Cup format allows the eight best third-placed teams across the 12 groups to advance to the Round of 32. Bosnia-Herzegovina's victory places them in a strong position within that qualification race, with their fate now dependent on results elsewhere across the tournament.

Should they progress, it would represent the country's first appearance in the World Cup knockout rounds and arguably the greatest achievement in the history of Bosnian football.

For Qatar, meanwhile, the tournament ends in disappointment after failing to record a single victory in Group B. Bosnia, however, can now dare to dream of extending their World Cup journey.
