FIFA World Cup 2026: Switzerland beat Canada 2-1 to win Group B

Switzerland secured first place in Group B at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating co-hosts Canada 2-1, ensuring Murat Yakin's side advance to the knockout stage as group winners.

The victory means Switzerland will enjoy a potentially more favorable Round of 32 tie, while Canada surrender top spot and now face a more demanding route through the tournament despite progressing to the knockout rounds.

Switzerland reward positive first-half display

Switzerland looked the sharper side throughout the opening half and consistently asked questions of Canada's defence.

Captain Granit Xhaka, making his 149th international appearance, dictated the tempo from midfield, while Breel Embolo came closest before the interval when his effort inside the penalty area forced an excellent save from goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau.

Although Canada remained organized defensively, Switzerland's control of possession and attacking movement suggested the breakthrough was only a matter of time.

Vargas and Manzambi turn match in Switzerland's favour

The Swiss finally found the breakthrough shortly after halftime through Ruben Vargas, whose composed finish rewarded a patient attacking move. Momentum quickly shifted completely in Switzerland's favor as the impressive Johan Manzambi doubled the advantage just 11 minutes later.

The move began with superb hold-up play from Breel Embolo, who created space before Manzambi arrived inside the box to finish confidently from close range.

The Freiburg midfielder continued his excellent World Cup campaign with another influential display, underlining why he has emerged as one of Switzerland's standout performers.

Promise David sparks late Canadian fightback

Canada refused to give up and found a lifeline late in the contest. Substitute Promise David made an immediate impact, scoring just 76 seconds after entering the match following an excellent flowing team move.

The goal energized the home supporters and set up a tense closing period as Jesse Marsch's side searched desperately for an equaliser. Despite several promising attacks, Switzerland defended with composure and protected their narrow advantage until the final whistle.

Canada face tougher knockout route

Defeat means Canada finish second in Group B after entering the final round of matches in pole position. Instead of remaining on home soil for the knockout phase, the co-hosts will now travel to Los Angeles, where they are scheduled to face the runners-up of Group A in the Round of 32 on June 28.

While progression to the knockout rounds remains a significant achievement, surrendering top spot removes the advantage of a potentially easier draw and home-based fixtures.

Switzerland, meanwhile, continue to build momentum after another disciplined performance and head into the knockout stage with growing confidence.
