Meet Johan Manzambi: Switzerland's breakout star at World Cup 2026

Every FIFA World Cup introduces the world to a new generation of stars, and Switzerland may have found theirs in Johan Manzambi.

The 20-year-old midfielder delivered a sensational cameo by scoring twice after coming off the bench as Switzerland defeated Bosnia and Herzegovina 4-1 in a dramatic Group B encounter.

His two late goals transformed what had been a tense contest into a comfortable victory and instantly placed his name among the tournament's biggest breakout performers.

Dream World Cup debut

Switzerland struggled to break down a stubborn Bosnian side for more than 70 minutes before head coach Murat Yakin turned to Manzambi. The youngster needed just two minutes to justify the decision.

Meeting the ball with outstanding technique, Manzambi unleashed a powerful first-time volley that finally broke the deadlock and shifted the momentum completely in Switzerland's favour.

He wasn't finished.

Deep into stoppage time, the midfielder calmly added his second goal to cap a dream World Cup debut and become the youngest Swiss player ever to score twice in a World Cup match.

From Goalkeeper dreams to Midfield star

Interestingly, Manzambi did not always dream of becoming an attacking midfielder. Growing up, he wanted to be a goalkeeper and idolised German legend Manuel Neuer before eventually transitioning into midfield as his football education progressed.

That decision has paid off spectacularly.

Blessed with composure, technical ability, intelligent movement and an eye for goal, Manzambi has rapidly developed into one of Switzerland's brightest prospects.

Rapid rise at Freiburg

The midfielder's rise has been remarkably quick. After making his professional debut only two years ago, Manzambi established himself in Freiburg's first team and enjoyed an outstanding campaign across domestic and European competitions.

He finished the season with seven goals and nine assists in 47 appearances while helping Freiburg reach the UEFA Europa League final.

His performances earned him the Europa League Young Player of the Season award and attracted interest from several top European clubs, including Bayer Leverkusen and Napoli.

Despite the growing transfer speculation, the Swiss international has remained focused.

"My contract runs until 2030. Right now, my focus is the World Cup and helping Switzerland," he recently said.

A New Weapon for Switzerland

Switzerland have built a reputation as one of international football's most consistent tournament teams, regularly reaching the knockout stages of major competitions. Manzambi's emergence could elevate them even further.

Unlike previous Swiss teams built primarily on defensive organisation, this squad now possesses an exciting young midfielder capable of changing matches with moments of individual brilliance.

His chemistry with experienced leaders such as Granit Xhaka and Ruben Vargas provides Switzerland with a perfect balance between youth and experience.

Eyes on the knockout stage

Following the victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina, Switzerland moved to the top of Group B and placed themselves firmly in control of qualification for the Round of 32.

While established stars continue to dominate headlines, Johan Manzambi has quietly announced himself as one of the most exciting young players at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

If his opening performance is any indication, football fans may be hearing his name for many years to come.
