Germany 2-1 Côte d’Ivoire: Undav fires Germany into World Cup knockout stage

Germany ended a 12-year wait for a FIFA World Cup knockout appearance after substitute Deniz Undav produced two decisive goals in a thrilling 2-1 victory over Côte d’Ivoire in Toronto.
Julian Nagelsmann's side looked destined for another frustrating evening after falling behind in the first half, but Undav's second-half heroics completed a remarkable turnaround that secured qualification for the Round of 32.
It marks Germany's first progression beyond the World Cup group stage since lifting the trophy in Brazil in 2014, ending disappointing exits in both 2018 and 2022.
Côte d’Ivoire strike first through Kessie
The African side made the brighter impression after weathering early German pressure. Their breakthrough arrived in the 30th minute when Franck Kessie finished from close range following excellent work by highly-rated teenager Yan Diomande, whose pace and creativity repeatedly troubled Germany's defence.
Diomande, regarded as one of Africa's brightest young talents, continues to attract interest from several elite European clubs after another impressive display on football's biggest stage.
Germany believed they had equalised twice before halftime.
Aleksandar Pavlovic bundled home from a corner after 21 minutes, but referee Juan Gabriel Benitez ruled the effort out for a foul on goalkeeper Yahia Fofana. Later, Kai Havertz found the net only for VAR to confirm Jamal Musiala had committed an infringement during the build-up.
Undav changes the match
Nagelsmann's side dominated possession after the restart and eventually found their reward through the introduction of Deniz Undav.
The Stuttgart forward levelled the contest midway through the second half with an excellent first-time volley after meeting a perfectly delivered cross from Nadiem Amiri.
Germany continued to press for a winner while Côte d’Ivoire defended bravely in search of what would have been a valuable point.
With the match heading toward a draw, Undav delivered the decisive moment four minutes into stoppage time, reacting quickest inside the penalty area to fire Germany into the lead and spark wild celebrations among the German supporters inside the stadium.
Germany finally break their World Cup curse
The victory represents a major milestone for German football after consecutive World Cup disappointments. Nagelsmann's tactical adjustments and the impact of his substitutes proved decisive, with Germany showing resilience that had been missing in recent tournaments.
Defender Jonathan Tah praised the team's mentality after full-time.
He highlighted Germany's fighting spirit, willingness to keep attacking, and the influence of players introduced from the bench, while reserving special praise for match-winner Undav.
Côte d’Ivoire still have qualification hopes
Despite suffering defeat, Côte d’Ivoire remain firmly in contention to reach the knockout stage. Victory over Curacao in their final Group G fixture could still be enough to secure progression depending on other results.
Although disappointed with the result, the Ivorians once again demonstrated they possess the quality to trouble some of the tournament's strongest nations.
