Netherlands thrash Sweden 5-1 as Gakpo and Brobbey shine At FIFA World Cup 2026

The Netherlands produced one of the most convincing performances of the FIFA World Cup 2026 so far, defeating Sweden 5-1 to move to the top of Group F and edge closer to a place in the knockout rounds.
Ronald Koeman's side overwhelmed Sweden with relentless attacking football as Brian Brobbey and Cody Gakpo both scored twice before substitute Crysencio Summerville added a late fifth.
Sweden managed only a second-half consolation through Anthony Elanga as the Dutch demonstrated why many now consider them genuine contenders for the title.
Brobbey makes the perfect statement
Koeman surprised many by selecting Brian Brobbey ahead of Crysencio Summerville following the draw against Japan. The Sunderland striker justified that decision almost immediately.
After just five minutes, the Netherlands launched a devastating counterattack from goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen. Brobbey controlled the long pass, released Cody Gakpo down the left, and sprinted into the penalty area to finish the return cross for the opening goal.
Twelve minutes later, Brobbey struck again.
Denzel Dumfries delivered another dangerous low cross into the area and the striker reacted quickest to poke home his second of the evening, putting the Dutch firmly in control.
Sweden thought they had pulled one back just before halftime through Gustaf Lagerbielke, but the defender's header was ruled out for offside.
Gakpo takes over after the break
The Netherlands wasted little time extending their advantage after halftime. Just two minutes into the second period, Dumfries once again created the opportunity with another dangerous delivery across goal, allowing Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo to finish from close range.
Seven minutes later, Gakpo grabbed his second.
Substitute Crysencio Summerville drove through midfield before slipping the ball perfectly into Gakpo's path, and the Liverpool attacker drilled a low finish beyond Kristoffer Nordfeldt. The goal also brought up the 100th goal of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, reaching the milestone faster than any tournament since the 1958 edition.
Sweden unable to respond
Sweden briefly threatened a comeback when Newcastle United winger Anthony Elanga raced onto a through ball before calmly lifting his finish over Bart Verbruggen.
However, any hopes of a recovery quickly disappeared.
Summerville capped an excellent substitute appearance by cutting inside and firing a low strike into the bottom corner late in the match to complete the scoring. The defeat leaves Sweden needing a positive result against Japan in their final group fixture to keep their knockout hopes alive.
Koeman's tactical changes deliver
After criticism following the opening draw against Japan, Ronald Koeman responded emphatically. The decision to introduce Brobbey provided the Netherlands with a physical focal point that constantly disrupted Sweden's back line.
The striker's hold-up play created space for runners such as Gakpo, Donyell Malen and Dumfries, while Summerville's second-half introduction added fresh energy that completely changed the game once again.
For the second consecutive World Cup match, Koeman's substitutions proved decisive.
Group F Outlook
The victory moves the Netherlands onto four points at the top of Group F and places qualification firmly within their grasp. Sweden, meanwhile, face a must-win encounter against Japan if they hope to reach the Round of 32.
With confidence growing and their attacking players finding form, the Dutch appear to be emerging as one of the strongest teams in the tournament.
