Germany cruise past Curaçao 7-1 in World Cup 2026 opener

Germany announced themselves as genuine contenders for the 2026 FIFA World Cup with an emphatic 7-1 victory over tournament newcomers Curaçao in their opening Group E fixture in Houston.

A clinical attacking display saw Julian Nagelsmann's side overwhelm the Caribbean debutants, with Kai Havertz scoring twice while Felix Nmecha, Nico Schlotterbeck, Jamal Musiala, Nathaniel Brown, and Deniz Undav also found the scoresheet.

The victory sends Germany to the top of Group E ahead of crucial clashes against Ecuador and Ivory Coast.

Germany strike early before Curaçao shock the four-time champions

Germany wasted little time asserting their dominance. Felix Nmecha opened the scoring after just six minutes, collecting Florian Wirtz's pass before curling a superb effort beyond veteran goalkeeper Eloy Room.

The early goal appeared to set the tone, but Curaçao responded in remarkable fashion.

Livano Comenencia stunned the German supporters when his deflected strike beat Manuel Neuer, becoming the first Curaçao player to score at a FIFA World Cup and briefly bringing the newcomers level.

For a few moments, thoughts of a major upset filled the stadium.

Havertz leads Germany's response

Germany quickly regained control after Curaçao's equaliser. Nico Schlotterbeck restored the lead before Kai Havertz converted from the penalty spot after Felix Nmecha was fouled inside the area, giving Germany a comfortable 3-1 halftime advantage.

The second half became a showcase of Germany's attacking quality.

Jamal Musiala scored less than two minutes after the restart following an excellent through ball from Joshua Kimmich, effectively ending any hopes of a Curaçao comeback.

Nathaniel Brown added a fifth before substitute Deniz Undav continued his impressive international form with another goal shortly after entering the match. Havertz completed his brace late in the contest to round off an outstanding team performance.

Manuel Neuer sets another World Cup record

Despite conceding once, Manuel Neuer reached another remarkable career milestone. At 40 years old, the legendary goalkeeper became the oldest German footballer ever to appear in a FIFA World Cup and featured in his fifth World Cup tournament.

Although largely untroubled throughout the match, Neuer could do little to prevent Comenencia's heavily deflected effort.

Curaçao show promise despite heavy defeat

While the scoreline proved difficult to take, Curaçao produced moments that demonstrated why they earned qualification for their first-ever FIFA World Cup. Veteran coach Dick Advocaat's side defended bravely for long periods and created history through Comenencia's goal.

Against one of world football's traditional powers, simply competing on the biggest stage represents a landmark achievement for the Caribbean nation.

The experience gained could prove invaluable as they prepare for their remaining group matches.

Germany sends early message to World Cup rivals

Germany have struggled in recent World Cups, suffering consecutive group-stage eliminations in 2018 and 2022 before reaching only the quarter-finals in 2026. This convincing opening victory suggests Nagelsmann's squad could finally be ready to challenge for a fifth FIFA World Cup title.

With attacking depth, creativity and experience throughout the squad, Germany have laid down an early marker ahead of tougher tests against Ecuador and Ivory Coast.
