Norway 2-1 Brazil: Haaland sends Norway into Quarter-finals

Norway produced one of the biggest upsets of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating five-time champions Brazil 2-1 in a dramatic Round of 16 clash, with Erling Haaland delivering a match-winning brace to keep his nation's dream alive.
Played at MetLife Stadium, the encounter remained goalless for much of the evening before Haaland struck twice in the closing stages to eliminate one of the tournament favourites and send Norway into the quarter-finals for the first time in their history.
Brazil pulled one goal back through Neymar deep into stoppage time, but it proved too little, too late as the Scandinavians celebrated a famous victory.
Nyland sets the tone with early penalty save
Brazil started brightly and controlled possession during the opening exchanges, creating several dangerous opportunities through Vinicius Junior, Gabriel Martinelli and Bruno Guimarães.
Their best chance arrived in the 14th minute after a VAR review awarded the Selecao a penalty.
However, Norway goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland guessed correctly and produced an outstanding save to deny Guimarães from the spot, giving his side a vital confidence boost. At the opposite end, Martin Ødegaard orchestrated Norway's attacks while Haaland tested Alisson Becker with several powerful efforts before halftime.
Haaland breaks Brazil's resistance
The match swung decisively after the break as Norway grew increasingly confident. Managerial changes injected fresh energy into the Norwegian attack, with Andreas Schjelderup making an immediate impact after coming off the bench.
Brazil responded by introducing Neymar and Endrick in search of a breakthrough, but it was Norway who found the opening goal.
In the 79th minute, Schjelderup delivered a perfectly floated cross into the penalty area where Haaland rose highest to power an unstoppable header beyond Alisson for a deserved lead.
The goal marked another major moment in Haaland's growing World Cup legacy.
Norway finish the job
Brazil threw players forward in pursuit of an equaliser, but Norway's disciplined defensive structure continued to frustrate the South American giants. With the Selecao committing numbers forward, Norway struck decisively on the counterattack in the 90th minute.
Schjelderup again turned provider, threading an excellent pass into Haaland's path before the Manchester City striker calmly slotted his finish into the bottom corner to complete his brace and double Norway's advantage.
The two-goal cushion appeared to put the contest beyond doubt.
Neymar scores late, but Brazil fall short
The drama continued deep into stoppage time. Following another VAR review, Brazil were awarded a second penalty after Leo Østigård was adjudged to have fouled Neymar inside the area.
Neymar converted confidently in the 100th minute to reduce the deficit to 2-1, but there was little time remaining after the restart. The final whistle confirmed Norway's place in the last eight and brought Brazil's pursuit of a sixth FIFA World Cup title to an abrupt end.
Haaland leads Norway's Golden Generation
Haaland once again demonstrated why he is regarded as one of world football's elite forwards. His clinical finishing, combined with Andreas Schjelderup's two assists and Ørjan Nyland's crucial first-half penalty save, proved decisive in one of Norway's greatest international victories.
For Brazil, missed opportunities ultimately proved costly.
The penalty miss by Bruno Guimarães, combined with several wasted chances throughout the match, left Carlo Ancelotti's side chasing the game before Haaland punished them late on.
Norway will now head into the quarter-finals full of confidence after eliminating one of the tournament favourites in emphatic fashion.
