Erling Haaland fires Norway into World Cup knockout stage against Senegal

Norway secured qualification for the FIFA World Cup 2026 knockout stage after edging Senegal 3-2 in an entertaining Group I encounter, with Erling Haaland once again proving the difference.

The Manchester City striker produced another clinical performance, scoring twice to guide Stale Solbakken's side into the Round of 32 with a game to spare. The result also confirmed Norway's place alongside France as the two teams advanced from the group.

Haaland continues remarkable World Cup form

Few players have made a stronger impression at this tournament than Haaland. After netting twice in Norway's opening fixture, the prolific striker repeated the feat against Senegal to take his tally to four goals in just two World Cup appearances, more than any Norwegian player has ever managed across the tournament's history.

His first arrived moments after halftime when Martin Odegaard threaded a perfectly weighted through ball behind Senegal's defence. Haaland sprinted clear before calmly finishing past Edouard Mendy.

The second showcased his instinctive finishing, meeting a cross with a composed first-time volley that clipped the underside of the crossbar before crossing the line.

The brace also extended Haaland's extraordinary scoring streak for Norway, with the forward continuing to deliver consistently whenever he pulls on the national team shirt.

Norway punish Senegal's defensive mistakes

Although Haaland grabbed the headlines, Norway's opener came through Marcus Pedersen. The defender, introduced earlier than expected after an injury substitution, reacted quickest after Kalidou Koulibaly failed to clear a dangerous ball inside the penalty area. Pedersen made no mistake, giving Norway a deserved halftime advantage after controlling much of the opening period.

Norway's aggressive pressing repeatedly unsettled Senegal, forcing errors in midfield while allowing Odegaard to dictate possession and create openings between the lines.

The Arsenal captain's vision and passing once again underlined his importance to Solbakken's attacking setup.

Senegal refuse to go quietly

Despite trailing by two goals after Haaland's opener, Senegal responded through Crystal Palace winger Ismaila Sarr. The forward reduced the deficit with an excellent finish that briefly reignited hopes of a comeback.

However, Haaland quickly restored Norway's two-goal cushion before Sarr struck again deep into stoppage time to set up a tense finale. Senegal pushed desperately for an equaliser, and Sarr nearly completed a dramatic hat-trick in the closing seconds, only to send a late header narrowly over the crossbar.

While the scoreline remained close, Norway had created the better opportunities throughout the contest and deserved all three points.

Group I Picture

Victory moves Norway onto six points from two matches, guaranteeing qualification for the knockout rounds regardless of results elsewhere. Their final group fixture against France will determine who finishes top of Group I, with both nations already through.

For Senegal, qualification hopes remain alive but are no longer fully in their control. They must defeat Iraq in their final group match and hope results elsewhere allow them to progress, potentially as one of the tournament's best third-placed teams.

Haaland growing into a tournament favourite

With four goals already, Haaland has quickly emerged as one of the standout performers of the World Cup. His combination of physical dominance, intelligent movement and ruthless finishing has made Norway one of the tournament's most dangerous attacking sides.

If the Scandinavians continue progressing, Haaland could become a genuine contender for both the Golden Boot and a deep World Cup run, something few predicted before the tournament began.

Norway now head into the knockout rounds full of confidence, driven by a striker who continues rewriting his nation's football history with every appearance.
