Belgium crush USA 4-1 to end American World Cup dream despite Balogun return

Belgium produced a ruthless attacking display to defeat the United States 4-1 in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16, ending the hosts' hopes of reaching the quarter-finals for only the second time in their history.
Despite the return of striker Folarin Balogun following the suspension of his red-card ban, Mauricio Pochettino's side struggled to match Belgium's quality as Charles De Ketelaere scored twice before Hans Vanaken and Romelu Lukaku completed an emphatic victory at Seattle's Lumen Field.
The result sends Belgium into the quarter-finals while extending the United States' frustrating World Cup record, having once again exited at the Round of 16 stage.
Balogun returns but Belgium strike first
Much of the pre-match attention centred on Balogun after FIFA's disciplinary committee suspended his automatic one-match ban, allowing the Monaco forward to return for the knockout clash.
The American supporters welcomed his inclusion with loud applause before kick-off, but Belgium quickly silenced the home crowd. Within the opening minute, Timothy Castagne forced goalkeeper Matt Freese into an early save before Belgium eventually broke through in the ninth minute.
Leandro Trossard sparked the move down the left, Nicolas Raskin reacted quickest to a loose ball and delivered an intelligent pass into the penalty area where Charles De Ketelaere slipped between Tim Ream and Antonee Robinson to score from close range.
Tillman responds before Belgium restore their advantage
The United States gradually found their rhythm after the first-half cooling break. Their reward arrived through Malik Tillman, whose dangerous free-kick took a significant deflection before beating the Belgian goalkeeper to level the contest. The equaliser briefly lifted the atmosphere inside Lumen Field.
However, Belgium responded immediately.
Just 52 seconds later, Trossard again exposed the American defence with another dangerous delivery from the left, allowing De Ketelaere to rise above Robinson and Ream to head home his second goal of the evening.
It proved to be the defining moment of the match.
Goalkeeping error ends American resistance
Pochettino introduced Gio Reyna early in the second half in search of creativity, but Belgium remained in control.
The decisive blow came after an unfortunate mistake from Matt Freese. The goalkeeper hesitated after collecting a loose ball outside his penalty area before clearing directly into the path of Hans Vanaken.
The Belgian midfielder calmly returned the ball into the empty net from long range as Ream desperately attempted to recover on the goal line. The mistake effectively ended any hopes of an American comeback.
Lukaku adds late emphasis
Belgium continued to threaten throughout the closing stages. Romelu Lukaku completed the scoring deep into stoppage time after capitalising on another American turnover before smashing an unstoppable finish beyond Freese.
The fourth goal reflected Belgium's superiority on the night, particularly in transition and inside the final third.
USA exit despite promising tournament
The defeat brings an end to an encouraging World Cup campaign for the United States. Pochettino's side had impressed during the group stage and comfortably defeated Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Round of 32 despite finishing that match with ten players following Balogun's dismissal.
His availability against Belgium followed FIFA's decision to suspend his automatic suspension after a disciplinary review. Although the decision generated significant discussion off the pitch, Belgium ensured the football became the main talking point.
The Americans struggled to establish control in midfield, while defensive lapses proved costly against one of Europe's most experienced international sides.
Belgium march into Quarter-finals
Belgium now progress to the quarter-finals full of confidence after one of their most complete performances of the tournament.
De Ketelaere's movement constantly troubled the American defence, Trossard was influential throughout, while Lukaku once again demonstrated why he remains one of international football's most dangerous forwards.
For the United States, attention now turns towards rebuilding ahead of future international competitions after another Round of 16 exit. Belgium, meanwhile, remain firmly in contention as the race for the 2026 FIFA World Cup title continues.
