Thunder bounce back to beat Spurs and take 3-2 Western Finals lead

The Oklahoma City Thunder are one win away from returning to the NBA Finals after delivering a strong response to their Game 4 struggles with a 127-114 win over the San Antonio Spurs in Game 5 of the Western Conference Finals.
After producing their lowest-scoring playoff performance in years in the previous game, Oklahoma City looked much closer to the team that has dominated throughout the season, aggressive defensively, efficient offensively, and relentless in transition.
The victory now gives the Thunder a 3-2 series advantage as they move within one win of setting up an NBA Finals showdown against the New York Knicks.
Shai returns to MVP form when Oklahoma City needed him most
After a quiet Game 4 by his standards, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander delivered the kind of performance Thunder supporters have come to expect.
The league MVP candidate finished with a game-high 33 points alongside nine assists and two steals, controlling the tempo throughout the contest.
His impact stretched beyond field goals. Gilgeous-Alexander repeatedly attacked the basket and converted 16 of his 17 free-throw attempts, forcing San Antonio's defense into difficult situations all evening.
His response after criticism from the previous game reflected the composure and leadership that has defined Oklahoma City's playoff run.
Thunder defense limits Wembanyama's impact
San Antonio still received moments of quality from Victor Wembanyama, who finished with 20 points, six rebounds, three blocks and two steals.
However, Oklahoma City's defensive plan significantly reduced his influence from open play. Wembanyama connected on only four of his 15 field-goal attempts as multiple Thunder defenders collapsed quickly and forced difficult shots.
Although the Spurs star remained efficient at the free-throw line, Oklahoma City prevented him from controlling the game in the way he had during previous stretches of the series.
Thunder depth delivers again
Oklahoma City once again showed why their squad depth has become one of the team's biggest strengths. Playing without Jalen Williams and Ajay Mitchell, the Thunder received major contributions from several players.
Jared McCain made the most of his first playoff start with 20 points, while Alex Caruso added 22 points, six assists, and three steals from the bench. Five Thunder players reached double figures as the team shot 48 percent from the field and 44 percent from three-point range.
Meanwhile, Stephon Castle and Julian Champagnie kept San Antonio competitive with important scoring contributions, but the Spurs struggled with turnovers and inconsistent shooting.
Spurs now face elimination pressure
The series now heads back to San Antonio, where the Spurs must win to keep their season alive.
Since the opening game of the series, momentum has swung dramatically between both teams, but Oklahoma City now carries the advantage and confidence into Game 6.
One more victory sends the Thunder back to the NBA Finals.
