Victor Wembanyama wins Defensive Player of the Year unanimously

Victor Wembanyama has made NBA history, becoming the first player ever to win the NBA Defensive Player of the Year by unanimous vote. The 22-year-old San Antonio Spurs star delivered a dominant defensive season, leaving no doubt among voters as he secured every first-place vote.
Wembanyama’s victory comes after a frustrating near-miss last season.
He was widely expected to win the award in his second year, but an injury shortly after the All-Star break ruled him out due to the NBA’s 65-game eligibility rule.
This season, however, there were no obstacles. Named a finalist alongside Chet Holmgren and Ausar Thompson, Wembanyama entered as the overwhelming favorite and delivered on expectations in historic fashion.
Youngest ever, and just getting started
At just 22, Wembanyama is now the youngest Defensive Player of the Year winner in NBA history. This marks his second major individual honor, following his unanimous NBA Rookie of the Year win in 2024.
His rapid rise has drawn comparisons to defensive greats, including fellow Frenchman Rudy Gobert, who has won the award four times, tied for the all-time record with Dikembe Mutombo and Ben Wallace.
Spurs Legacy Continues
Wembanyama becomes the fourth player in Spurs history to win Defensive Player of the Year, joining Alvin Robertson, David Robinson, and Kawhi Leonard. Leonard remains the only Spur to have won the award twice, for now.
MVP Contender status adds to the hype
Beyond his defensive dominance, Wembanyama is also in the running for the league’s top individual honor. He has been named an MVP finalist alongside reigning winner Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and three-time MVP Nikola Jokić.
While Gilgeous-Alexander is widely tipped to secure back-to-back MVP awards, Wembanyama’s late-season surge has firmly placed him in the conversation.
A New Defensive Era?
With elite rim protection, versatility, and unprecedented physical tools, Wembanyama’s unanimous DPOY win could mark the start of a new era of defensive dominance. At just 22, the question is no longer if he will collect more trophies, but how many.
