Switzerland beat Algeria 2-0 to reach FIFA World Cup Round of 16

Switzerland secured their place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 after producing another disciplined performance to defeat Algeria 2-0 at BC Place in Vancouver.
Goals from Breel Embolo and Dan Ndoye ensured Murat Yakin's side claimed a historic third consecutive victory, while Algeria and captain Riyad Mahrez saw their World Cup campaign come to an end.
The Swiss will now await the winner of the Colombia versus Ghana clash as they continue their pursuit of a first-ever World Cup quarter-final appearance in the modern era.
Embolo gives Switzerland early control
Switzerland settled quickly and controlled possession through their experienced midfield pairing of Granit Xhaka and Remo Freuler. Their patience was rewarded before halftime when Breel Embolo capitalised on a defensive lapse to put Switzerland ahead.
The Monaco striker once again demonstrated his importance to the Swiss attack, using his strength and movement to trouble Algeria's backline throughout the contest. The early breakthrough allowed Switzerland to dictate the tempo for much of the match.
Dan Ndoye delivers another outstanding display
If Embolo provided the breakthrough, Dan Ndoye supplied the finishing touch. The winger was Switzerland's most dangerous attacking outlet all evening, constantly stretching Algeria's defence with his pace and direct running.
His second-half goal effectively ended the contest as Switzerland doubled their advantage and comfortably saw out the remaining minutes. Beyond his goal, Ndoye consistently created problems in one-on-one situations and contributed defensively, earning the highest player rating of the match.
Algeria struggle to break through
Algeria entered the knockout stage hoping to produce another memorable World Cup upset but struggled to create sustained attacking pressure. Captain Riyad Mahrez found little space to influence proceedings as Switzerland's organised defensive structure limited his opportunities in dangerous areas.
Amine Gouiri and Ibrahim Maza also found chances difficult to come by against Manuel Akanji and Nico Elvedi, who remained composed throughout. Despite enjoying moments of possession, Algeria lacked the cutting edge required to mount a comeback.
Switzerland's defensive organisation continues to impress
One of Switzerland's biggest strengths throughout the tournament has been their defensive discipline. Goalkeeper Gregor Kobel was called into action when required, while Akanji, Elvedi and Denis Zakaria kept Algeria's forwards under control for most of the evening.
The clean sheet further highlights Switzerland's growing confidence as they prepare for a tougher Round of 16 challenge.
What the result means
The victory extends Switzerland's winning streak to three consecutive matches at the FIFA World Cup for the first time in the nation's history.
With momentum continuing to build, Murat Yakin's team now heads into the Round of 16 full of confidence.
For Algeria, however, the defeat brings an end to an encouraging tournament despite some promising displays during the group stage. While elimination is disappointing, several younger players gained valuable experience that could benefit the national team in future major competitions.
