Mikel Oyarzabal brace sends Spain into World Cup last 16

Spain booked their place in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a commanding 3-0 victory over Austria, ending a frustrating 16-year wait for a knockout-stage win at football's biggest tournament.
Led by another outstanding performance from Mikel Oyarzabal, who scored twice, Luis de la Fuente's side produced a display full of patience, technical quality and defensive discipline to underline their credentials as genuine World Cup contenders.
Oyarzabal rewards Spain's dominance
Austria defended resolutely during the opening half-hour, frustrating Spain despite the European champions dominating possession and territory.
La Roja thought they had broken the deadlock midway through the first half when Marc Cucurella fired home from a loose ball following a corner, only for VAR to rule the effort out after Pau Cubarsí was adjudged to have impeded goalkeeper Alexander Schlager.
Spain continued to push forward and eventually found the breakthrough in the 36th minute.
Cucurella delivered a low cross into the penalty area, where Oyarzabal timed his run perfectly before guiding a first-time finish into the net to score his third goal of the tournament.
Schlager keeps Austria alive
Without goalkeeper Alexander Schlager, Austria could have found themselves trailing by several goals before the interval. The Austrian shot-stopper denied Oyarzabal with an excellent low save before producing one of the saves of the tournament moments later.
He brilliantly tipped Alex Baena's curling free-kick onto the crossbar before recovering instantly to block Lamine Yamal's rebound from close range. His heroics ensured Austria remained within touching distance heading into halftime.
Spain turn control into victory
The second half followed a familiar pattern, with Spain monopolising possession while patiently searching for openings. Their second goal finally arrived in the 66th minute after another flowing move.
Alex Baena delivered an inviting cross into the area where Pedro Porro surged forward from right-back to power a header beyond Schlager and effectively put the contest beyond Austria.
Although substitute Sasa Kalajdžić came closest for Austria shortly after entering the match, heading narrowly over the crossbar, Spain never looked under serious pressure.
Oyarzabal completes his brace
Spain capped another polished performance with a third goal in the closing moments. Once again, Marc Cucurella played a decisive role, threading an excellent through ball behind the Austrian defence.
Oyarzabal calmly collected the pass before sliding his finish beyond Schlager to complete his brace and move onto four goals for the tournament.
The Real Sociedad forward is now among the leading contenders for the Golden Boot after another clinical display.
While Spain's attacking quality has attracted attention throughout the tournament, their defensive record has arguably been even more impressive.
Goalkeeper Unai Simón recorded his fourth consecutive clean sheet as Spain joined Mexico as the only teams yet to concede a goal after four matches at the tournament.Austria rarely created meaningful opportunities despite entering the knockout stage with confidence following an impressive group campaign.
Lamine Yamal continues to influence
Although still waiting to truly explode statistically, teenage sensation Lamine Yamal once again demonstrated why he remains one of the tournament's most dangerous players.
The Barcelona winger consistently troubled Austria's makeshift left flank with his pace and dribbling, creating several chances throughout the match. He was unfortunate not to score after David Alaba produced an outstanding goal-line clearance late in the game.
His creativity continues to provide another dimension to Spain's attack despite his modest goal tally.
Spain finally bury their knockout demons
Perhaps the biggest takeaway from the victory is psychological. Since defeating the Netherlands in the 2010 FIFA World Cup Final, Spain had failed to win another knockout match at the competition.
Their recent disappointments included:
- Group-stage elimination in Brazil 2014
- Penalty shootout defeat to hosts Russia in 2018
- Penalty shootout loss to Morocco in Qatar 2022
That unwanted sequence has finally come to an end. Combined with their defensive consistency and growing attacking fluency, Spain appear to be peaking at exactly the right stage of the tournament.

With momentum firmly on their side, Spain head into the Round of 16 full of confidence. Having scored freely while remaining defensively flawless, La Roja increasingly look like one of the strongest contenders to lift the FIFA World Cup for the second time in their history.
