Alexander Zverev powers past injured Taylor Fritz to reach Wimbledon semi-finals

Alexander Zverev booked his place in the Wimbledon 2026 semi-finals after defeating Taylor Fritz 6-4, 6-4, 6-2 in a match overshadowed by an injury that limited the American's ability to compete.
Fritz entered the quarter-final hoping to repeat his victory over Zverev from the 2024 US Open, but his challenge was severely affected when knee tendinitis resurfaced just three games into the contest.
The sixth seed admitted he immediately knew something was wrong as discomfort in his right knee returned unexpectedly during the opening set.
Fritz's injury changes the contest
Despite arriving in good condition and completing his pre-match warm-up without concern, Fritz said the pain appeared suddenly early in the match. The American took a medical timeout during the second set to receive treatment on his knee, but the intervention did little to ease the problem.
Unable to move with his usual explosiveness, Fritz struggled to apply sustained pressure on one of the tournament's strongest servers.
"I was just panicking, wondering what I was going to do," Fritz said after the match.
Zverev delivers a clinical performance
While Fritz battled discomfort, Zverev produced one of his most complete performances of the tournament. The French Open champion dominated behind his serve, never allowing the American to establish any rhythm from the baseline.
Fritz created four break-point opportunities but failed to convert any of them as Zverev consistently delivered under pressure. The victory also ended a seven-match losing streak against the American, marking an important breakthrough in their rivalry.
Fritz praises his opponent
Although disappointed by the physical setback, Fritz was quick to acknowledge the quality of Zverev's performance. The American admitted the German's serving was exceptional and suggested the outcome may have remained difficult even had he been fully fit.
With the injury affecting both his movement and concentration, Fritz was unable to produce the level that had carried him into the last eight.
Zverev moves one step closer
The victory sends Zverev into another Wimbledon semi-final as he continues his pursuit of a first title at the All England Club. After lifting his maiden Grand Slam trophy at Roland Garros earlier this season, the German remains firmly in contention for a second major title of 2026.
His powerful serving and confident all-round game make him one of the favourites as the tournament reaches its final stages.
