Wimbledon 2026: Karolina Muchova edges Gauff to book maiden final

Karolina Muchova produced the performance of her career to book a place in her first Wimbledon final, surviving a match point before defeating Coco Gauff in a gripping three-set semi-final at the All England Club.

The Czech 10th seed battled through two hours and 35 minutes of high-quality tennis to defeat the American seventh seed 6-2, 1-6, 7-6 (12-10) on Centre Court, setting up the biggest match of her career.

Muchova will now face either fellow Czech Linda Noskova or Ukraine's Marta Kostyuk in Saturday's championship match as she chases a maiden Grand Slam singles title.

Muchova continues remarkable Wimbledon breakthrough

Reaching the Wimbledon final represents another milestone for Muchova, who had never previously progressed beyond the first round at the Championships before this year's tournament.

Her impressive run also marks her second appearance in a Grand Slam final after finishing runner-up at the 2023 French Open.

Having endured multiple injury setbacks over recent seasons, including lengthy absences following wrist surgery, Muchova's resurgence has become one of tennis' most inspiring comeback stories.

Speaking after the match, the Czech admitted the emotional occasion had tested every aspect of her game.

"It sounds really nice to be in the final. It was such a big fight. It was very nerve-wracking."

Fast start gives Muchova early advantage

Muchova dictated play from the opening exchanges, exposing Gauff's inconsistent serving with aggressive returns and controlled baseline rallies. The Czech broke twice during the opening set, taking advantage of a series of unforced errors from the American before closing out the opener with an ace.

Gauff struggled to find rhythm early, committing numerous mistakes as Muchova consistently varied her pace and used her trademark slice to disrupt rallies.

Gauff responds like a Champion

The momentum shifted dramatically in the second set. Gauff, a two-time Grand Slam champion, steadied her serve and began dictating points with greater aggression from the baseline.

Improved first-serve percentages and cleaner ball striking allowed the American to race through the second set, breaking Muchova twice to level the contest and force a deciding set.

The turnaround showcased the resilience that has become one of Gauff's defining characteristics on the WTA Tour.

Deciding tie-break delivers Wimbledon classic

The final set produced one of the tournament's most memorable finishes. Neither player managed to establish lasting control as both saved crucial break points during a tense battle that eventually required a deciding tie-break.

Muchova briefly appeared troubled by an abdominal issue but continued fighting through obvious discomfort. The drama intensified when Gauff earned a match point after Muchova received a time violation warning while preparing to serve.

However, Gauff was unable to convert the opportunity, allowing the Czech another chance to stay alive. Muchova responded with a brilliant defensive lob before eventually converting her second match point to complete a remarkable victory.

One spectacular full-stretch diving volley during the tie-break even drew applause from Gauff herself.

Injury struggles make victory even sweeter

Muchova's journey back to the top level has been far from straightforward. Over recent years, she has battled injuries affecting both wrists, her back, abdomen, thigh, ankle, and foot.

At one stage, medical advice even suggested she consider ending her professional career before eventually returning following wrist surgery that sidelined her for almost ten months. Now, she stands just one victory away from capturing the first Grand Slam title of her career.

Wimbledon final awaits

Muchova now advances to the Wimbledon final full of confidence after overcoming one of the tournament favourites. Awaiting her will be either Czech compatriot Linda Noskova or Ukraine's Marta Kostyuk, with the winner earning the opportunity to lift the Venus Rosewater Dish for the first time.

For Muchova, the chance to complete one of the sport's most remarkable comeback stories is now only one match away.
