Naomi Osaka stuns Aryna Sabalenka to reach first Wimbledon quarter-final

Naomi Osaka delivered one of the biggest surprises of Wimbledon 2026 by defeating world No.1 Aryna Sabalenka in straight sets to secure her first-ever quarter-final appearance at the All England Club.

The Japanese star produced a superb display of power, precision and composure to beat Sabalenka 6-2, 7-6 (2) on Centre Court, earning her most significant victory since returning to professional tennis following her maternity break. The result also ended Sabalenka's hopes of capturing her first Grand Slam title of the season while extending Osaka's remarkable resurgence in 2026.

Osaka produces statement performance

Entering the match, Sabalenka had won all three meetings between the pair earlier this year, including a straight-sets victory in the fourth round of the French Open.

This time, however, Osaka completely flipped the script.

The former world No.1 matched Sabalenka's power from the baseline, consistently taking the ball early and flattening out her groundstrokes to dictate play throughout the opening set.

Playing in temperatures approaching 28°C, Osaka's aggressive style proved even more effective on the quick Wimbledon grass, where her penetrating shots repeatedly rushed the Belarusian into uncharacteristic mistakes.

She secured an early break before confidently closing out the first set 6-2 in just over half an hour.

Sabalenka fights back, but Osaka holds firm

Sabalenka raised her level significantly in the second set and attempted to drag the contest into a deciding third. Both players held serve during a tense battle that eventually reached a tiebreak. But Osaka once again elevated her game when it mattered most.

She dominated the breaker 7-2 with fearless ball-striking, sealing victory on her second match point before holding her racket to her head in disbelief as Centre Court erupted in applause.

It was the first time Sabalenka had suffered a straight-sets defeat at a Grand Slam in 122 matches, and her earliest exit at a major tournament since the 2022 French Open.

Biggest victory since her return

The victory represents another major milestone in Osaka's remarkable comeback.

After stepping away from tennis in 2021 to prioritize her mental health and later missing the entire 2023 season following the birth of her daughter, the four-time Grand Slam champion has steadily rebuilt her confidence over the past two years.

Following a maiden fourth-round appearance at Roland Garros earlier this year, Osaka has now reached the Wimbledon quarter-finals for the first time in her career. Speaking after the match, she reflected on the emotional significance of the victory.

"It's been a long time since I had so much fun on the court. To do it here means a lot."

Quarter-final clash awaits

Osaka's reward is a quarter-final showdown against Czech star Karolina Muchova, who has also impressed throughout the tournament. With Sabalenka now eliminated, the women's draw has opened considerably, giving Osaka a genuine opportunity to challenge for her first Wimbledon title.

Having already overcome the tournament favourite, the Japanese star will enter the last eight with renewed belief as her impressive comeback continues on one of tennis' biggest stages.
