World Cup 2026 Round of 32 Race: Complete Qualification Guide

The battle for places in the FIFA World Cup 2026 knockout stage has entered its decisive phase as the final round of group fixtures gets underway across the United States, Canada and Mexico.
With the tournament expanded to 48 nations for the first time, qualification has become more complex than previous editions. Instead of only the top two teams progressing from each group, eight of the 12 third-placed teams will also advance to complete the 32-team knockout bracket.
Several heavyweights have already secured their places, while others still have work to do.
Teams already through
A number of nations have already guaranteed qualification before their final group matches. Among those safely into the Round of 32 are:
- Argentina
- Brazil
- France
- Germany
- Mexico
- Netherlands
- Morocco
- Norway
- Colombia
- England
- Switzerland
- Canada
- South Africa
- United States
- Australia
- Ivory Coast
- Japan
Many of these countries will now focus on winning their groups to secure a more favourable knockout draw.
Groups still wide open
Several groups remain completely undecided heading into the final fixtures.
Group G
Egypt currently lead but still require a positive result against Iran to guarantee top spot. Belgium, Iran and New Zealand all remain capable of progressing depending on the final results.
Group H
Spain are favourites to qualify but still need at least a draw against Uruguay. Cabo Verde remain firmly in contention, while Saudi Arabia must defeat Cabo Verde and hope results elsewhere go their way.
Group I
France and Norway have already qualified. Their final meeting will decide first place, while Senegal and Iraq are battling to keep slim hopes alive through the best third-placed rankings.
Group J
Argentina have already won the group. Austria only need a draw against Algeria to secure second place, while Algeria require victory to qualify automatically.
Group K
Colombia have already progressed and need only avoid defeat against Portugal to finish first. Portugal are almost certain to qualify as runners-up, while DR Congo still have an outside chance through the third-place rankings.
Group L
England lead Group L ahead of Ghana only on goal difference. Croatia remain alive and know victory over Ghana could send them into the knockout rounds.
How third-placed teams qualify
One of the biggest changes introduced for the expanded tournament is the qualification route for third-placed nations. After all group matches conclude:
- The top eight third-placed teams advance.
- Rankings are determined by:
- Points
- Goal difference
- Goals scored
- Fair play record
- FIFA World Ranking (June 2026 edition)
That means even teams finishing third with four points, or in some cases three—could still reach the knockout stage depending on results elsewhere.
Teams in strong position as best third-placed sides
Several countries have placed themselves in excellent positions should they finish third:
- Bosnia and Herzegovina (already guaranteed qualification)
- Ecuador
- Sweden
- Paraguay
- South Korea
- Ghana (if they finish third)
- Croatia (if they draw)
Other nations such as Algeria, DR Congo, Cabo Verde and Senegal still need positive results to strengthen their chances.
Knockout bracket beginning to take shape
A number of Round of 32 fixtures have already been confirmed. Some of the standout ties include:
- Brazil vs Japan
- Morocco vs Netherlands
- Canada vs South Africa
- United States vs Bosnia and Herzegovina
Several more blockbuster matchups will only become clear after the remaining group fixtures conclude.
Pressure builds ahead of Final Group matches
While teams such as Argentina, Brazil and France can already begin preparing for the knockout rounds, many others face must-win encounters over the coming days.
With group winners hoping for favourable draws and third-placed nations fighting to stay alive, the final round of fixtures promises to deliver some of the most dramatic football of the tournament so far.
By the end of the group stage, only 32 nations will remain in contention to lift football's biggest prize on July 19.
