Why the Premier League will have nine teams in Europe next season

The Premier League will once again have nine clubs competing in European competitions next season after Crystal Palace completed a remarkable campaign by winning the UEFA Europa Conference League.
Palace defeated Rayo Vallecano 1-0 in the final to secure their first-ever European trophy and confirm a place in next season’s Europa League, pushing England’s total number of European representatives to nine.
The achievement matches the record previously set by the Premier League during the 2024-25 campaign.
How Nine Premier League Teams Qualified For Europe
The Premier League’s traditional qualification structure already guarantees multiple European places through league position and domestic cup success.
This season, Arsenal, Manchester City, Manchester United, and Aston Villa secured automatic qualification for the UEFA Champions League after finishing inside the top four.
However, England also benefited from UEFA’s European Performance Spot (EPS), which awards an additional Champions League place to the league whose clubs collectively perform best across UEFA competitions during the season.
The Premier League earned that bonus spot for the second consecutive year. That extra Champions League berth reshaped the qualification picture across the table.
Europa League and Conference League Places Shifted Down
Because of the additional Champions League place, the Europa League qualification spots normally reserved for fifth and sixth position shifted lower in the standings.
As a result, Bournemouth and Sunderland both secured Europa League qualification, marking historic achievements for both clubs.
For Sunderland, it represents a dramatic return to European football after years outside the Premier League, while Bournemouth will play continental football for the first time in their history.
Brighton, meanwhile, secured a place in the UEFA Europa Conference League despite narrowly missing out on the Europa League positions after late-season defeats affected their final standing.
Crystal Palace then completed the Premier League’s European lineup through their Conference League triumph.
Crystal Palace Complete Historic Season
Palace’s victory over Rayo Vallecano capped one of the most successful periods in the club’s history. Within the past year, the Eagles have now won the FA Cup, Community Shield, and Europa Conference League under manager Oliver Glasner.
Despite finishing 15th in the Premier League table, Palace still secured Europa League football because UEFA competition winners automatically qualify for Europe regardless of domestic league position.
That route has increasingly become one of the most important alternative qualification paths for clubs outside the traditional top six.
Premier League Continues European Dominance
The Premier League’s ability to place nine clubs into European competitions highlights the growing strength and financial power of English football across UEFA tournaments.
English clubs have consistently advanced deep into European competitions in recent seasons, helping the Premier League maintain one of UEFA’s strongest coefficient rankings.
That strong continental performance directly contributed to England earning the European Performance Spot once again.
Last season, the Premier League also reached nine European representatives after Tottenham Hotspur qualified for the Champions League by winning the Europa League.
