Premier League 2025/26 European places confirmed after dramatic final day

The Premier League season ended with celebration, heartbreak and significant movement across the race for European football as the final qualification places for next season's continental competitions were officially settled.

While several clubs had already secured their positions before the final round of fixtures, the closing day still delivered major consequences, including a historic achievement for Bournemouth and a remarkable European return for Sunderland.

Champions League: Five English clubs secure elite competition places

The Premier League will send five teams into next season's UEFA Champions League after the race concluded on Sunday.

Qualified clubs:

  • Arsenal (1st)
  • Manchester City (2nd)
  • Manchester United (3rd)
  • Aston Villa (4th)
  • Liverpool (5th)

Aston Villa had already boosted their chances after winning the Europa League, but their final-day victory over Manchester City ensured Unai Emery's side climbed into fourth place and confirmed a direct Champions League place on merit.

Liverpool, meanwhile, closed their season with a draw against Brentford and ultimately had to settle for fifth place.

Villa's qualification represents another milestone in the club's remarkable rise under Emery, with European success and domestic consistency transforming them into one of England's strongest projects.

Bournemouth write club history in Europa League qualification

Qualified for Europa League:

  • AFC Bournemouth (6th)
  • Sunderland (7th)

Few stories this season compare with Bournemouth's achievement. After losing key players and rebuilding during the summer, the Cherries produced one of the campaign's biggest surprises by securing the club's first-ever European qualification.

Their consistency during the second half of the season proved decisive, turning them from outsiders into continental qualifiers.

Sunderland's return is equally remarkable.

Having spent time in League One only a few seasons ago, the Black Cats have now earned European football for the first time in more than five decades. Their victory over Chelsea on the final day completed one of the league's most impressive turnaround stories.

Brighton secure Conference League football

Qualified for Conference League:

  • Brighton & Hove Albion (8th)

Brighton narrowly missed out on the Europa League but still earned another opportunity on the European stage.

The Seagulls previously impressed during their recent continental campaign and will enter the Conference League with ambitions of making a deep run.

Recent seasons have shown that clubs outside England's traditional elite can compete strongly in Europe, and Brighton may view the competition as a realistic chance for silverware.

One more European place could still be decided

There remains one unresolved possibility.

If Crystal Palace defeat Rayo Vallecano in the Conference League final, Palace would also secure a Europa League place next season. That outcome would further strengthen England's representation across UEFA competitions.
