How Aston Villa’s Europa win could hand EPL six Champions League spots

The Premier League is already guaranteed five places in next season’s UEFA Champions League. But thanks to a rare combination of UEFA rules and on-field results, a sixth English club could still qualify, and Aston Villa is right at the centre of it.

The Key Rule: European Performance Spot (EPS)

UEFA’s relatively new system, the European Performance Spot (EPS), rewards leagues whose clubs perform best across all European competitions. UEFA calculates this using association club coefficients, essentially the average performance of clubs from each country.

  • England currently ranks 1st in Europe
  • This guarantees an extra Champions League place
  • Result: Top 5 in the Premier League qualify automatically

So where does the sixth spot come from?

Here’s where things get interesting. For the Premier League to get six teams into the Champions League, two things must happen:

1. Aston Villa win the Europa League

Winning the UEFA Europa League gives automatic qualification to the Champions League.

2. Aston Villa finish 5th in the league

Because of the EPS, 5th place already qualifies for the Champions League.

Why does that create an extra slot

If Villa achieves both:

  • Their Europa League win gives them a Champions League spot
  • Their 5th-place finish also gives them a Champions League spot

But they can’t use both. So what happens? Their league-based spot (5th place) becomes redundant. That spot is then passed down to 6th place.

Result: SIX Premier League teams in the Champions League

What’s the Trade-Off?

There’s no such thing as a free bonus in UEFA’s system.

  • England would lose one Europa League place
  • That slot would be reallocated to another country

So:

  • Champions League: +1 team
  • Europa League: -1 team

Why this matters right now

This scenario has turned the race for 6th place into something far bigger than usual.

Clubs like Chelsea, Brighton & Hove Albion, Newcastle United are now effectively battling for a potential Champions League place, not just Europa League football. With only a few points separating mid-table sides, the stakes have skyrocketed late in the season.

The Bigger Picture

In a typical campaign, finishing 6th in the Premier League means second-tier European competition at best. This season, it could mean:

  • Elite-level exposure
  • Major financial rewards
  • A place among Europe’s top clubs

All hinging on whether Aston Villa can deliver in Europe and land in exactly the right position domestically.
