Knicks win 2026 NBA Championship after 53-year wait

The New York Knicks have finally returned to the summit of the NBA, defeating the San Antonio Spurs 94-90 in Game 5 of the NBA Finals to capture their first championship in 53 years.

The victory completed a dominant 4-1 Finals series and ended one of the longest championship droughts in American professional sports, delivering the franchise's first Larry O'Brien Trophy since 1973.

For generations of Knicks supporters, it was a moment many feared would never come.

A historic season ends in glory

After taking a commanding 3-1 series lead, New York travelled to San Antonio needing just one more victory. The Spurs fought throughout Game 5, but the Knicks held their composure in the closing minutes to secure the four-point victory inside the Frost Center.

The title also erased painful memories of the 1999 NBA Finals, when San Antonio defeated New York in the franchise's most recent championship appearance before this season.

A Championship built on resilience

The championship caps one of the greatest turnarounds in recent NBA history. For much of the past two decades, the Knicks endured rebuilding seasons, coaching changes, and playoff disappointments.

This season was different.

Led by All-NBA guard Jalen Brunson and a deep, disciplined roster, New York emerged as one of the league's most consistent teams before carrying that momentum through the playoffs.

Their Finals journey included one of the most remarkable victories in NBA championship history when the Knicks erased a 29-point deficit in Game 4 to stun San Antonio 107-106, the largest comeback ever recorded in an NBA Finals game. That dramatic victory gave New York a 3-1 series advantage and placed the franchise on the brink of history.

Game 5 completed the job.

New York celebrates a long-awaited triumph

Although the decisive game was played in Texas, the celebrations were firmly centred in New York. Thousands of supporters gathered around Madison Square Garden, Times Square, Radio City Music Hall, and sports bars across Manhattan to watch the game.

When the final buzzer sounded, fans flooded the streets waving Knicks jerseys, chanting throughout the city and celebrating a championship many had waited their entire lives to witness.

For younger supporters, it marked the first NBA title they had ever seen their team win.

Spurs fall short despite strong campaign

San Antonio entered the Finals hoping to secure another championship, but the Spurs ultimately struggled to recover after the heartbreaking Game 4 collapse.

Despite pushing New York deep into Game 5, they were unable to overturn the series deficit as the Knicks' defence once again delivered in the closing stages. The Spurs now turn their attention to regrouping ahead of next season after falling just short of another NBA title.

Championship restores Knicks among NBA elite

The victory gives New York its third NBA championship and re-establishes one of basketball's most iconic franchises among the league's elite. More importantly, it rewards one of the NBA's most passionate fan bases after more than five decades of waiting.

The 2026 season will forever be remembered as the year the Knicks finally climbed back to the top of professional basketball.
