Wembanyama leads Spurs past Knicks in Game 3 to cut NBA Finals deficit

The San Antonio Spurs reignited the 2026 NBA Finals on Monday night as Victor Wembanyama produced another signature postseason performance to lead his team to a 115-111 victory over the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden.

Facing the possibility of falling into a daunting 3-0 series deficit, the Spurs responded with urgency and composure. Wembanyama finished with 32 points, eight rebounds, six assists, three blocks, and two steals as San Antonio secured its first win of the championship series and cut New York's lead to 2-1.

The victory also ended the Knicks' remarkable 13-game postseason winning streak and ensured the Finals will extend to at least five games.

"We did what we were supposed to do, but the job is absolutely not done," Wembanyama said after the game. "We're not even halfway. The hardest is still to come."

Wembanyama sets the tone early

After relatively slow starts in Games 1 and 2, Wembanyama wasted no time making his presence felt.

The French superstar connected on his first four field-goal attempts and consistently attacked the Knicks' defense from the opening tip. His combination of size, skill and defensive versatility created problems throughout the night, particularly in the paint where San Antonio established control.

The Spurs shot confidently early and raced to a 33-22 advantage after the first quarter, quieting a Madison Square Garden crowd eager to witness the franchise's first NBA Finals home game since 1999.

Knicks rally before Spurs regain control

New York responded strongly in the second quarter. Led by Jalen Brunson and OG Anunoby, the Knicks outscored San Antonio 42-24 during the period to take a 64-57 halftime lead. Brunson scored 10 points in the quarter while Anunoby added 11 as the home side briefly appeared ready to seize complete control of the series.

However, the Spurs emerged from halftime with renewed intensity.

San Antonio opened the third quarter on a 6-0 run and steadily chipped away at the deficit. The lead changed hands multiple times before the Spurs carried a slim 92-91 advantage into the fourth quarter.

With the game hanging in the balance, Wembanyama delivered when it mattered most. He scored 10 points in the final period and helped stretch San Antonio's lead to eight points with under five minutes remaining.

Fox and Castle deliver in clutch moments

While Wembanyama dominated headlines, the Spurs received valuable contributions across the roster.

Stephon Castle scored 23 points, while De'Aaron Fox added 12 points, including a crucial late jumper that helped preserve San Antonio's advantage in the closing seconds.

Castle then calmly knocked down two free throws on the Spurs' final possession to secure the win.

Dylan Harper provided a major spark off the bench with 13 points and nine rebounds, while Julian Champagnie also contributed 12 points.

San Antonio's ball movement proved to be one of the game's deciding factors. The Spurs recorded 28 assists compared to just eight turnovers, showcasing the efficient offensive execution that had been missing in the first two games.

"I thought we showed better poise," Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said. "I thought we were in attack mode, but also as a collective group."

Brunson and Anunoby lead Knicks fightback

Despite the defeat, New York remained competitive until the final possession. Brunson finished with 32 points, including 12 in the fourth quarter, while Anunoby added 28 points in one of his best performances of the postseason.

However, turnovers proved costly. The Knicks committed 13 giveaways, leading directly to 21 Spurs points. New York also struggled to contain San Antonio's penetration and interior scoring throughout the contest.

"Their level of physicality was great tonight," Knicks coach Mike Brown said. "Our attention to detail on both ends of the floor wasn't great. We allowed them to live in our paint."

Celebrity crowd watches Series shift

The historic occasion attracted a star-studded audience to Madison Square Garden. Among those in attendance were President Donald Trump, actors Timothée Chalamet, Tina Fey, and Ben Stiller, along with baseball legend Derek Jeter and numerous other celebrities.

With some of the most expensive NBA Finals tickets ever recorded being sold for the matchup, the atmosphere reflected the significance of the Knicks' first Finals home game in nearly three decades.

NBA Finals Series Outlook

The Knicks still lead the best-of-seven series 2-1, but momentum has shifted heading into Game 4. For San Antonio, Wembanyama's dominant display demonstrated why many view him as the future face of the NBA. For New York, Game 4 now becomes a critical opportunity to avoid allowing the Spurs to level the series before it returns to Texas.

Game 4 is scheduled for Wednesday night at Madison Square Garden, where both teams will battle in what could prove to be the defining contest of the 2026 NBA Finals.
