Morocco beat Scotland 1-0 in World Cup Group C clash

Scotland's hopes of reaching the FIFA World Cup knockout stages suffered a setback after a 1-0 defeat to Morocco in Group C on Thursday.
An early goal from Ismael Saibari proved enough for the African champions, who punished a defensive lapse inside two minutes before holding off Scotland's second-half pressure in Boston. Despite the defeat, Steve Clarke's side still have qualification in their own hands heading into a decisive final group match against Brazil.
Nightmare start for Scotland
Scotland could hardly have made a worse start. After just 70 seconds, poor defending from Grant Hanley and Jack Hendry allowed Ismael Saibari to burst into space before firing an unstoppable finish beyond Angus Gunn.
The early goal immediately shifted momentum in Morocco's favour as the Atlas Lions controlled possession and looked comfortable against a stunned Scottish side.
Steve Clarke had reshuffled his team, deploying Kieran Tierney higher up the pitch to help contain Morocco captain Achraf Hakimi, but the tactical plan was undone almost immediately by Saibari's clinical finish.
Morocco control before Scotland respond
Morocco dominated much of the opening half without adding to their advantage. Scotland gradually settled into the contest and almost found an equaliser before halftime when John McGinn arrived at the back post but sliced his effort wide.
The chance gave the Tartan Army hope after a difficult opening 45 minutes.
Following the restart, Morocco continued to threaten, with Bilal El Khannouss forcing an excellent save from Gunn while Jack Hendry produced a crucial block to deny another dangerous attack.
Scotland finish strong
As the second half progressed, Scotland grew increasingly confident. Ben Doak's introduction injected pace and directness into the attack, stretching Morocco's defence and creating more space for the midfield.
Scott McTominay appealed strongly for a penalty before seeing a deflected effort hit the side netting, while substitute Lyndon Dykes also headed narrowly wide as Scotland pushed for an equaliser.
Despite their late pressure, Morocco remained disciplined defensively to secure all three points.
Qualification still within reach
Although disappointed with the result, Scotland remain firmly in contention for a place in the knockout rounds. Victory over Brazil in their final Group C fixture would give Clarke's side an opportunity to reach the World Cup knockout stage for the first time in their history.
After recovering well from a disastrous opening, Scotland will believe there is still plenty to play for.
Key Performer
Ismael Saibari (Morocco)
The PSV Eindhoven midfielder made the decisive impact with his superb strike after just 70 seconds. His movement, composure and finishing gave Morocco the early advantage they successfully defended throughout the match.
Key Moment
Saibari's second-minute goal
Scotland never fully recovered from conceding inside the opening two minutes. The early breakthrough allowed Morocco to dictate the tempo and ultimately proved to be the winning moment in Boston.
