Scott McTominay honoured with limited-edition Scotland £20 note

Scott McTominay has received an unusual and memorable tribute after his iconic goal for Scotland was transformed into a limited-edition £20 banknote celebrating the country's return to the FIFA World Cup.

The special note, unveiled by the Bank of Scotland, honours Scotland's qualification for the men's World Cup for the first time since 1998 and places McTominay's spectacular overhead kick at the centre of the design.

Only 100 of the notes have been produced, making it an extremely rare collector's item for football supporters and memorabilia enthusiasts.

A goal that became a national moment

Scotland sealed qualification after defeating Denmark 4-2 at Hampden Park in November. The night quickly became one of the country's most memorable football occasions, with McTominay opening the scoring through an acrobatic overhead finish that immediately entered Scottish football folklore.

The goal carried even greater significance because it arrived during a match that ultimately secured Scotland's long-awaited place on football's biggest international stage.

McTominay reflected on the recognition and the emotional connection supporters have with the moment.

"Reaching the biggest stage of world football is something every player dreams of," he said. "Moments like that belong to everyone who follows the team, so seeing my goal featured on a Scottish banknote feels incredibly special."

More than a collector's item

The initiative extends beyond football celebration alone. Half of the limited collection will be distributed through collector auctions, prize draws, and special fan events in Glasgow and Edinburgh.

Funds raised through the project will support homelessness charity Crisis Scotland, adding a charitable element to the campaign.

According to the Bank of Scotland, the project combines two strong national symbols, football and Scottish identity, into a single commemorative piece. For supporters, however, the note is likely to represent something simpler: a reminder of a goal that helped end nearly three decades of waiting.
