Justin Trudeau faces backlash after attending US World Cup opener instead of Canada’s match

Former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has found himself at the centre of online debate after attending the United States' opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup instead of Canada's historic tournament opener.
Trudeau was present at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, where the United States defeated Paraguay 4-1 in front of more than 70,000 fans.
His appearance came just hours after co-host Canada played Bosnia and Herzegovina in Toronto, earning a 1-1 draw to secure the nation's first-ever FIFA World Cup point.
Trudeau explains decision
Following criticism on social media, Trudeau explained why he chose to attend the American fixture. The former Canadian leader revealed that he travelled to California to support his girlfriend, international pop star Katy Perry, who headlined the pre-match entertainment before kickoff.
Posting on X, Trudeau wrote:
"Sometimes supportive boyfriend duties call. But you know who I'm rooting for to take the Cup."
Perry performed during the opening ceremony at SoFi Stadium before the United States' impressive victory over Paraguay.
Canada's historic night
While Trudeau watched events unfold in California, Canada celebrated a landmark moment at BMO Field in Toronto. Jesse Marsch's side fought back to draw 1-1 with Bosnia and Herzegovina thanks to a late equaliser from substitute Cyle Larin.
The result delivered Canada's first point in FIFA World Cup history after previously losing all six matches across their appearances in 1986 and 2022.
The opening ceremony in Toronto also featured performances from Canadian music stars Michael Bublé and Alanis Morissette, making it one of the country's biggest sporting occasions in decades.
Social media reaction
Trudeau's decision quickly became a talking point online. Many supporters questioned why the former prime minister attended the United States' fixture instead of Canada's opening match, particularly given his role in government during the successful joint bid that brought the 2026 FIFA World Cup to Canada, the United States and Mexico.
Others defended Trudeau, arguing that supporting his partner during a major international performance was a personal decision rather than a political statement.
The discussion intensified after Katy Perry's pre-match performance, with some fans expressing disappointment that her appearance lasted only a single song despite the high-profile event.
Trudeau's connection to Canada's World Cup bid
Trudeau served as Canada's Prime Minister from 2015 until 2025, overseeing the period during which Canada secured hosting rights alongside the United States and Mexico for the expanded 48-team FIFA World Cup.
The tournament marks Canada's biggest football event in history, with Toronto and Vancouver serving as official host cities.
Although absent from Canada's opening fixture, Trudeau's message made clear where his sporting loyalties remain as the co-host nation looks to qualify for the knockout rounds.
Focus turns to matchday two
Canada now prepares for a crucial Group B meeting with Qatar, while the United States will look to build on their emphatic 4-1 victory over Paraguay when they continue their Group D campaign.
With both North American co-hosts making encouraging starts, attention will quickly return to the football as the biggest FIFA World Cup ever staged gathers momentum.
