Real Madrid confirm Jose Mourinho return on three-year deal

Real Madrid have officially appointed Jose Mourinho as their new head coach, bringing one of football’s most successful and controversial managers back to the Santiago Bernabeu more than a decade after his first spell in charge.
The Portuguese tactician has signed a three-year contract and will begin work when Real Madrid’s squad returns for pre-season training on July 13.
The move marks one of the biggest managerial appointments of the summer and signals the club’s determination to return to winning ways after two consecutive trophyless seasons.
Mourinho returns after 13 years
Mourinho previously managed Real Madrid between 2010 and 2013, overseeing one of the most competitive periods in modern Spanish football.
During his first spell, he guided Los Blancos to 1 La Liga title, 1 Copa del Rey, and 1 Spanish Super Cup. His 2011-12 league-winning side famously accumulated 100 points and scored a then-record 121 goals in a single La Liga season.
Now, 13 years later, Mourinho returns with the task of rebuilding a club that has struggled to maintain its domestic and European dominance in recent campaigns.
Real Madrid pay compensation to secure deal
Real Madrid reportedly paid Benfica €15 million (£13 million) in compensation to secure Mourinho's release. The 63-year-old leaves Benfica after an unbeaten domestic campaign, although the Portuguese giants ultimately finished third in Liga Portugal.
Despite the disappointing league position, Mourinho's experience, leadership and winning pedigree convinced Madrid president Florentino Perez that he remains the right man to lead the club forward.
Florentino Perez delivers election promise
The appointment follows Florentino Perez's successful presidential re-election campaign. Perez secured another term after receiving approximately 65% of votes against challenger Enrique Riquelme.
One of the key promises during his campaign was the return of Mourinho to the Bernabeu. With the election victory secured, Perez wasted little time in bringing back a manager who remains a popular figure among sections of the Real Madrid fanbase.
A career built on success
Mourinho remains one of the most decorated managers in football history. His major achievements include:
Porto
- UEFA Champions League winner (2004)
- Primeira Liga champion
Chelsea
- Multiple Premier League titles
- FA Cup and League Cup trophies
Inter Milan
- Historic treble winner (2010)
- UEFA Champions League winner
Real Madrid
- La Liga champion
- Copa del Rey winner
Manchester United
- UEFA Europa League winner
- League Cup winner
Roma
- UEFA Europa Conference League winner
Across more than two decades in elite football, Mourinho has consistently delivered silverware wherever he has worked.
What Mourinho brings to this Real Madrid team
Real Madrid's recent struggles have highlighted concerns in several areas: Defensive organization, Squad balance, Consistency in big matches and Leadership on and off the pitch. Mourinho's reputation has been built on addressing exactly those issues.
His return could bring tactical structure, winning mentality, and squad accountability. Mourinho's teams are renowned for their defensive discipline and game management.
Few managers possess his experience of handling pressure at Europe's biggest clubs. Mourinho is known for demanding high standards and fostering strong competitive environments.
Having won the Champions League twice, he understands the demands of elite knockout football.
Challenges await
Despite the excitement surrounding his return, Mourinho faces significant challenges. Modern football has evolved considerably since his first Madrid spell, and expectations remain enormous.
Among his priorities will be restoring Real Madrid as La Liga contenders, challenging for the UEFA Champions League, managing a squad filled with elite personalities, and ending the club's recent trophy drought.
With a three-year contract and full backing from Perez, Mourinho will have an opportunity to shape the next phase of Real Madrid's future.
A new chapter begins
For many supporters, Mourinho's return feels like the revival of an unfinished story. His first tenure delivered trophies but also intense rivalries, memorable Clasicos, and some of the most emotionally charged moments in recent club history.
Now, with Real Madrid searching for a fresh direction, one of football's most recognizable managers has been handed the responsibility of restoring the club to the summit of European football.
Whether this second chapter proves as successful as the first remains to be seen, but Mourinho's return ensures that all eyes will once again be on the Santiago Bernabeu.
