Jose Mourinho reportedly holds talks over Real Madrid return

José Mourinho has reportedly opened discussions with Real Madrid over a possible return to the Santiago Bernabéu, with the Portuguese coach said to have already outlined several conditions before accepting the role.

According to reports from Spanish outlet ESDiario, later backed by journalist Ramon Alvarez de Mon, Mourinho recently held an initial video call with senior Real Madrid officials as uncertainty continues to surround the club’s managerial situation.

The development comes despite Mourinho publicly stating last week that he had not spoken with Real Madrid regarding the position.

Mourinho wants Greater Sporting Control

The report claims Mourinho is seeking extensive authority if he returns for a second spell in Madrid. Among his reported demands are a two-year contract, full control over team selection decisions, and permission to appoint seven trusted members of his own coaching staff.

Club president Florentino Pérez is also believed to have suggested incorporating current Real Madrid coach Álvaro Arbeloa into Mourinho’s proposed backroom setup.

The Portuguese manager reportedly wants direct communication with the club’s medical department while limiting administrative involvement from senior figures such as adviser Anas Laghrari and general manager Jose Angel Sanchez.

Instead, Mourinho is said to prefer working directly with Perez as his sole line of communication inside the club hierarchy.

Major Structural Changes

Beyond coaching and administrative adjustments, Mourinho is reportedly planning significant changes to Real Madrid’s squad structure.

The former Chelsea and Inter Milan manager allegedly wants tighter control over pre-season planning, particularly avoiding demanding commercial tours across North America or the Middle East that could affect player fitness ahead of the new campaign.

He is also believed to favour a leaner squad and could sanction the departures of as many as seven players during the summer transfer window. Several players currently face uncertain futures at the club.

Veterans Antonio Rüdiger, David Alaba, and Dani Carvajal are approaching the end of their contracts, while midfielder Dani Ceballos is widely expected to leave. Questions also remain over the long-term roles of Fran García, Eduardo Camavinga, Franco Mastantuono, Gonzalo García, and Raúl Asencio.

Real Madrid facing pressure after difficult season

Speculation surrounding Mourinho’s possible return has intensified amid growing instability at Real Madrid. The club’s disappointing season has included an early UEFA Champions League exit, dressing room tensions, and the possibility of losing the La Liga title to rivals FC Barcelona.

Reports of internal conflicts involving key players such as Federico Valverde and Aurélien Tchouaméni have further increased scrutiny around the squad’s unity and long-term direction.

Mourinho’s reputation for restoring discipline and competitive intensity could appeal to Perez as the club considers a reset ahead of next season.

Mourinho’s previous Real Madrid spell

Mourinho previously managed Real Madrid between 2010 and 2013, overseeing one of the most intense eras in modern Spanish football. During his first spell, he won La Liga, the Copa del Rey, and the Spanish Super Cup while building a fiercely competitive side capable of challenging FC Barcelona during Pep Guardiola’s dominant period.

His Madrid team famously accumulated a then-record 100 La Liga points during the 2011–12 title-winning campaign.

Although his tenure ended amid dressing room divisions and tensions with sections of the media and supporters, Mourinho remains respected by many Madrid fans for restoring the club’s competitive mentality in Europe.

Decision could shape Madrid’s future

Real Madrid have yet to officially confirm their managerial plans for next season, but reports linking Mourinho with a return are likely to generate major debate across European football.

Supporters remain divided over whether revisiting a previous era represents the right long-term direction for the club.

However, with pressure mounting and expectations remaining exceptionally high at the Bernabéu, Perez may ultimately prioritise experience, authority, and proven success.

If negotiations progress, Mourinho’s potential return would instantly become one of the biggest managerial stories in world football heading into the summer.
