Valverde suffers head injury after dressing room clash with Tchouameni ahead of El Clasico

Real Madrid have been thrown into fresh controversy ahead of a decisive El Clasico clash after midfielder Federico Valverde suffered a head injury during a heated dressing room altercation involving teammate Aurélien Tchouaméni.

The incident reportedly occurred on Thursday morning at the club’s Valdebebas training complex and has intensified concerns over growing tensions within the Madrid squad following a disappointing campaign.

Valverde later confirmed he required hospital treatment after sustaining what he described as a “small cut” on his forehead, though he strongly denied reports suggesting the confrontation became physical.

At no point did my teammate hit me, and I didn’t hit him either,” Valverde wrote in a statement shared on Fabrizio Romano's Instagram. The Uruguay international explained that the injury happened after he accidentally struck a table during an emotional argument.

Real Madrid confirm concussion diagnosis

In an official medical update, Real Madrid stated that Valverde had been diagnosed with cranioencephalic trauma, a form of concussion, and will now remain under medical supervision for between 10 and 14 days.

The injury rules him out of Sunday’s crucial El Clasico against FC Barcelona at the Nou Camp. The timing could hardly be worse for Carlo Ancelotti’s side, who trail Barcelona by 11 points in the La Liga title race with only four games remaining.

Anything other than a victory for Madrid would hand Barcelona a second consecutive league title. Real Madrid also confirmed that disciplinary proceedings have been opened against both Valverde and Tchouameni while internal investigations continue.

Valverde apologises amid emotional season

In his statement, Valverde admitted frustration inside the squad had reached a breaking point after a season filled with setbacks.

I feel that my anger about the situation and my frustration at seeing some of us struggling to get through the end of the season pushed me to the point of arguing with a teammate,” he wrote. "I’m sorry because this situation hurts me.

The midfielder also criticised the public handling of the incident, accusing unnamed individuals of leaking internal matters from inside the dressing room.

“In a normal locker room, these things can happen and are usually resolved internally without becoming public,” he added. “Clearly, someone here is spreading rumours.” Valverde further described the current campaign as “another wasted year” for the club.

Emergency meeting held at Real Madrid

The seriousness of the situation reportedly prompted an emergency meeting involving club president Florentino Pérez, coaching staff, and senior players, including captain Dani Carvajal.

Spanish media reports have described the incident as one of the most serious internal disputes witnessed at Valdebebas in recent years.

The controversy adds to an increasingly turbulent atmosphere around Real Madrid following their UEFA Champions League quarter-final exit and underwhelming domestic campaign.

Reports of Dressing Room Friction

The Valverde-Tchouameni confrontation is not the first sign of unrest inside the squad this week. Earlier, defender Álvaro Carreras addressed speculation surrounding another reported disagreement involving Antonio Rüdiger.

Carreras acknowledged there had been an incident with a teammate but insisted the matter had already been resolved internally.

Supporters have also questioned the commitment of star forward Kylian Mbappé after reports emerged that he spent recovery time in Sardinia during a difficult period for the team.

Pressure builds ahead of defining El Clásico

Sunday’s clash against Barcelona now carries even greater significance for Real Madrid. Beyond the title implications, the match represents an opportunity for the squad to demonstrate unity amid growing scrutiny over internal relationships and dressing room morale.

The absence of Valverde, one of Madrid’s most influential and energetic players, could prove particularly damaging given the intensity usually associated with El Clasico encounters.

For Barcelona, victory would officially secure another La Liga crown. For Real Madrid, defeat could intensify questions surrounding the club’s direction, squad harmony, and future planning heading into next season.

With investigations still ongoing and emotions clearly running high, the spotlight around Madrid has become sharper than ever.
