France 1-0 Paraguay: Mbappé penalty secures quarter-final spot

France survived a determined Paraguay challenge to book their place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 quarter-finals after Kylian Mbappé's second-half penalty sealed a hard-fought 1-0 victory in Philadelphia.

The French captain once again delivered when it mattered most, converting from the spot after a lengthy VAR review to eliminate a resilient Paraguayan side that frustrated the tournament favourites for much of the contest.

Didier Deschamps' men will now face Morocco in one of the standout quarter-final ties after the Atlas Lions comfortably defeated co-hosts Canada earlier in the day.

Paraguay push France all the way

Paraguay arrived in the Round of 16 full of confidence after an impressive group-stage campaign and once again showed tremendous defensive organisation.

Their aggressive pressing and physical approach disrupted France's attacking rhythm, forcing Les Bleus into a patient battle for openings rather than the free-flowing football many expected.

Despite dominating possession, France struggled to create clear-cut opportunities during the opening hour as Paraguay defended with discipline and commitment.

VAR provides France's breakthrough

The decisive moment arrived in the 70th minute. Young French forward Désiré Doué burst into the penalty area before colliding with Paraguay midfielder Diego Gómez. Initially waved away by the referee, the incident was reviewed by VAR before a penalty was awarded.

Mbappé calmly stepped forward and confidently converted from the spot, sending goalkeeper Orlando Gill the wrong way to score his seventh goal of the tournament.

Mbappé continues Golden Boot chase

The goal keeps Mbappé firmly in contention for another FIFA World Cup Golden Boot. The French superstar now has seven goals in the 2026 tournament, drawing level with Argentina captain Lionel Messi at the top of the scoring charts.

The strike also extended Mbappé's remarkable World Cup legacy.

He and Messi remain the only players to score at least seven goals in two separate FIFA World Cup tournaments, further cementing their status among football's greatest performers on the biggest stage.

Mbappé nearly added to his tally late in the game, but Orlando Gill produced several outstanding saves to deny the France captain in the closing minutes.

Morocco await in the quarter-finals

France's reward is a fascinating quarter-final meeting against Morocco. The North African side continued their impressive World Cup journey with a convincing victory over tournament co-hosts Canada and will once again attempt to upset one of football's traditional powerhouses.

The fixture also renews memories of their famous 2022 World Cup semi-final, adding another layer of intrigue to Thursday's encounter.

Paraguay exit with pride

Although eliminated, Paraguay leave the tournament with considerable credit. Their disciplined defensive display pushed one of the tournament favourites to the limit and showcased the progress made by the South American nation.

Goalkeeper Orlando Gill was particularly impressive, making several outstanding saves that prevented France from extending their advantage and keeping Paraguay in contention until the final whistle.
