Davide Ancelotti appointed Lille head coach

French club Lille OSC have confirmed the appointment of Davide Ancelotti as their new head coach, marking a significant milestone in the young manager’s career.
The 36-year-old has signed a two-year contract and will lead Lille into the 2026/27 campaign, which includes a return to the UEFA Champions League following the club’s third-place finish in Ligue 1 last season.
Ancelotti succeeds Bruno Genesio, whose tenure came to an end despite guiding Lille back into Europe's elite club competition.
First major European head coaching opportunity
While Davide Ancelotti is a familiar face in elite football circles, this appointment represents his first major managerial role in European football.
Over the past decade, he has worked alongside his father, Carlo Ancelotti, at some of the world's biggest clubs, including Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Napoli, and Everton.
He also formed part of the coaching staff of the Brazil national football team during their successful qualification campaign for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
His only previous spell as a full-time head coach came with Botafogo, where he spent a short period in charge before leaving the role.
Lille betting on a modern football vision
Lille officials highlighted Ancelotti's tactical knowledge, experience in elite dressing rooms, and ability to work with young players as key reasons behind the appointment.
Despite his relatively young age, Ancelotti arrives with extensive exposure to high-level football environments, having worked with some of the sport’s biggest stars and competed regularly in the Champions League.
The club believes his modern coaching approach aligns with its long-term sporting project and ambition to remain competitive both domestically and in Europe.
Champions League challenge awaits
The appointment comes at a crucial moment for Lille, who are preparing for a demanding campaign that combines Ligue 1 ambitions with Champions League football.
The French side finished third in the league standings last season, securing automatic qualification for Europe's premier club competition. After competing in Europe last year, Lille will now look to take another step forward under new leadership.
For Davide Ancelotti, the challenge represents an opportunity to step out from his father's shadow and establish his own managerial identity on one of football’s biggest stages.
Can Davide Ancelotti follow his father's path?
Few coaches begin their managerial journey with the level of experience Ancelotti has accumulated behind the scenes. Having learned from one of football's most decorated managers, expectations will naturally be high.
The coming season will provide the clearest indication yet of whether Davide can translate years of elite apprenticeship into success as a head coach in his own right.
With Champions League football on the horizon and a talented squad at his disposal, Lille are betting that the next Ancelotti chapter is ready to begin.
