Neymar returns as Ancelotti names Brazil 2026 World Cup squad

Brazil's World Cup plans will once again feature one of the most recognizable names in global football after Neymar earned a place in Carlo Ancelotti's 26-man squad for this summer's tournament.

The Santos forward returns to the national setup after an extended absence caused largely by injury setbacks, and his inclusion marks a significant moment ahead of the expanded FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

For Neymar, the call-up means a fourth appearance at football's biggest tournament after representing Brazil in 2014, 2018 and 2022. The 34-year-old remains Brazil's all-time leading goalscorer with 79 goals from 128 appearances and continues to hold a unique place in the country's football history.

Ancelotti, who is preparing for his first major tournament with Brazil, revealed the squad during a ceremony in Rio de Janeiro where supporters reacted enthusiastically to Neymar's name being announced.

Speaking on the selection, the Italian coach explained that the decision was built around careful assessment rather than sentiment.

"We spent the entire year analysing Neymar," Ancelotti said. "We saw continuity in his performances and good physical condition during this period."

Neymar's return adds experience to Brazil's attack

Brazil arrive at the tournament with a blend of proven stars and emerging talent.

The attacking unit includes Real Madrid winger Vinicius Junior, Barcelona's Raphinha, Arsenal forward Gabriel Martinelli and teenage prospect Endrick. Manchester United forward Matheus Cunha and Bournemouth youngster Rayan are also included, adding variety to Ancelotti's options.

Neymar's return could provide more than goals. Brazil's younger generation enters the competition with increasing expectations, and his experience across multiple World Cups may become an important leadership factor.

The Selecao have won the World Cup five times, more than any nation in football history, but they have not lifted the trophy since 2002.

Surprise calls and notable omissions

Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson returns despite missing several matches recently through injury concerns, while experienced midfielder Casemiro also earns a place.

One of the more surprising absences is Chelsea forward Joao Pedro, who enjoyed a productive domestic season and finished as the club's leading Premier League scorer with 15 goals and five assists.

Brazil's coaching staff appear to have prioritised tactical balance and experience ahead of individual statistics. The squad also reflects Ancelotti's preference for versatility across midfield and defensive positions.

Brazil's Group Stage Fixtures

Brazil will begin their World Cup campaign with three group-stage matches:

  • June 13: Brazil vs Morocco
  • June 20: Brazil vs Haiti
  • June 24: Brazil vs Scotland

With the tournament expanding to 48 teams, Brazil enter the competition among the favourites, carrying expectations that accompany every World Cup cycle. Much of the spotlight, however, will inevitably follow Neymar.

After years interrupted by injuries and uncertainty surrounding his international future, the veteran forward now has another opportunity to pursue the one major trophy still missing from his decorated career.
