FIFA World Cup 2026: Vinícius double fires Brazil past Scotland to win Group C

Brazil underlined their status as one of the favourites for the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating Scotland 3-0 to secure top spot in Group C and book their place in the Round of 32.
Real Madrid forward Vinícius Júnior delivered another match-winning performance, scoring twice to continue his remarkable tournament form, while Matheus Cunha also found the net in a convincing victory for Carlo Ancelotti's side.
The result means Brazil advance unbeaten after collecting seven points from three group-stage matches, extending their remarkable record of reaching the knockout rounds in every World Cup since 1966.
Vinícius continues Golden Boot charge
Brazil wasted little time taking control of the contest. Just seven minutes into the match, Scotland's defence was punished after a costly mistake allowed Vinícius Júnior to race through on goal before calmly rounding goalkeeper Angus Gunn to slot home the opener.
The goal marked his fourth contribution of the tournament and immediately settled Brazil, who dominated possession throughout the opening period.
Vinícius doubled his tally moments before halftime, rising inside the penalty area to head home after Scotland failed to clear another dangerous Brazilian attack.
The brace moved him onto four goals at the tournament, placing him firmly among the leading contenders for the Golden Boot alongside Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappé.
Brazil show growing momentum
After opening the tournament with a frustrating draw against Morocco, Brazil have steadily found their rhythm.
Victories over Haiti and Scotland showcased a team growing in confidence under Carlo Ancelotti, who praised both the performance and the team's development since arriving in North America.
The Seleção controlled the midfield through quick passing and intelligent movement, limiting Scotland to very few meaningful opportunities. Matheus Cunha wrapped up the victory late in the match, finishing confidently after another flowing attacking move to make it 3-0.
Neymar returns to World Cup action
One of the biggest moments of the evening came in the closing stages when Neymar made his long-awaited tournament debut.
The Brazilian icon had missed the opening two matches through a calf injury but received a standing ovation from supporters as he entered the match in the 76th minute.
Although his appearance was brief, Neymar looked comfortable on the ball and offered encouraging signs ahead of the knockout rounds.
His return gives Brazil another world-class attacking option as they prepare for tougher opposition in the latter stages of the competition.
Scotland exit with pride
Despite the defeat, Scotland leave the tournament having earned widespread praise for their fearless approach. Competing in their first FIFA World Cup since 1998, Steve Clarke's side brought huge travelling support and moments of promise throughout the group stage.
However, defensive errors against one of football's most clinical attacking sides ultimately proved costly. The Tartan Army continued to back their players until the final whistle, even as Scotland's hopes of progressing came to an end.
Brazil's knockout ambitions grow
Brazil now enter the Round of 32 with growing confidence and one of the tournament's most dangerous attacking units.
Vinícius Júnior's outstanding form, combined with Neymar's return and the creativity of players like Rodrygo, Raphinha and Cunha, gives Ancelotti multiple attacking options as the competition intensifies.
Having not lifted the FIFA World Cup since 2002, Brazil appear increasingly capable of mounting another serious challenge for football's biggest prize.
