Atletico Madrid beat Barcelona on aggregate to reach UCL semifinals

Atletico Madrid booked their place in the UEFA Champions League semi-finals for the first time in nine years, edging Barcelona 3-2 on aggregate despite a 2-1 defeat in the second leg. Their 2-0 first-leg advantage proved decisive in a dramatic night in Madrid.

Barcelona wasted no time in responding to their first-leg deficit. Lamine Yamal opened the scoring early, capitalising on a defensive error to give the visitors hope. Moments later, Ferran Torres doubled the lead on the night with a superb finish, leveling the tie on aggregate before halftime.

Lookman strikes the decisive blow

With the tie finely poised, Ademola Lookman delivered the crucial moment. The forward finished calmly from a Marcos Llorente cross to restore Atletico’s aggregate advantage and swing momentum back to the hosts.

Barcelona thought they had completed the turnaround when Torres found the net again in the second half, but the goal was ruled out for offside after a VAR review. Late pressure from Robert Lewandowski and Ronald Araújo came close, but Atletico held firm.

Red card turns the tide

Barcelona’s task became even harder when Eric García was sent off for a last-man challenge. Down to 10 men, the visitors pushed forward but lacked the cutting edge to complete a famous comeback.

Simeone’s game plan pays off

Under Diego Simeone, Atletico showed resilience and tactical discipline. Despite early setbacks, they stuck to their approach, absorbing pressure and striking on the counter. The atmosphere at the Metropolitano also played a key role, driving the team through difficult moments.

Atletico reach their first semi-final since 2016 and will face either Arsenal or Sporting CP. For Barcelona, it’s another painful European exit despite a spirited performance.

Atletico Madrid once again proved why they are one of Europe’s toughest knockout teams. They bent under pressure, but didn’t break.
