Atletico Madrid beat 10-man Barcelona 2-0 in UCL quarterfinal first leg

Atlético Madrid seized control of their UEFA Champions League quarterfinal with a clinical 2-0 away victory over Barcelona, capitalising on a decisive first-half red card at Camp Nou.

Goals from Julián Álvarez and Alexander Sørloth handed Diego Simeone’s side a strong advantage heading into the second leg in Madrid.

Red Card turns the game

Barcelona were in control for much of the first half, pressing high and pinning Atletico deep in their own half. However, the match shifted dramatically just before halftime.

Pau Cubarsí was sent off following a last-man challenge on Giuliano Simeone, who had broken through on goal. Initially shown a yellow card, the decision was upgraded to a red after a VAR review. Moments later, Atletico made the advantage count.

Álvarez strikes from set piece

From the resulting free kick, Julián Álvarez delivered a moment of quality, curling a precise effort around the wall and beyond Joan García to give Atletico a crucial 1-0 lead in the 45th minute.

The timing of the goal compounded Barcelona’s setback, leaving them both behind and a man down going into halftime.

Barcelona fight, but Atletico stay clinical

Despite the numerical disadvantage, Barcelona showed resilience in the second half. Young star Lamine Yamal and Marcus Rashford attempted to spark a comeback, pushing Atletico onto the back foot for periods.

However, Atletico’s defensive organisation held firm, true to their identity under Diego Simeone.

Sørloth seals the advantage

The tie was effectively tilted further in Atletico’s favour in the 70th minute. Substitute Alexander Sørloth made an immediate impact, meeting a delivery from Matteo Ruggeri at the near post and finishing decisively to make it 2-0.

The goal highlighted Atletico’s efficiency, making the most of limited chances while maintaining defensive discipline.

What it means ahead of the second leg

With a two-goal cushion and home advantage for the return fixture, Atletico Madrid are now firmly in control of the tie. Barcelona, meanwhile, face a difficult task in Madrid, needing a near-perfect performance to overturn the deficit and keep their European hopes alive.
