Xavi becomes first foreign Netherlands Coach since 1978
The Netherlands have appointed Xavi Hernandez as their new head coach, making the former Barcelona midfielder the country’s first foreign manager since 1978.
The Dutch Football Association confirmed on Wednesday that Xavi has signed a four-year contract that will keep him in charge through Euro 2028 and the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
The appointment comes after Ronald Koeman stepped down following the Netherlands’ penalty defeat to Morocco in the round of 32.
First foreign Oranje boss in 48 years
Xavi becomes the first non-Dutch coach to lead the national team since Austrian Ernst Happel, who guided the Netherlands to the 1978 World Cup final before losing to Argentina.
His arrival marks a significant shift for a federation that has traditionally preferred homegrown managers.
Xavi: “I feel a special connection to Dutch football”
The 46-year-old said the influence of Dutch football on his career made the role especially meaningful. He highlighted the impact of Johan Cruyff, Rinus Michels, Louis van Gaal and Frank Rijkaard, all of whom helped shape his football philosophy during his Barcelona career.
Xavi described himself as “a bit of a son of Dutch football” and said he wants the Netherlands to play attacking, possession-based football that supporters can enjoy.
First match set for Germany clash
Xavi’s debut in charge will come in a UEFA Nations League meeting with Germany at the Johan Cruyff Arena in Amsterdam on September 24.
The fixture will immediately place him under the spotlight against one of the Netherlands’ biggest international rivals.
Coaching career so far
Xavi has been out of management since leaving Barcelona in 2024. Before that, he coached Al-Sadd in Qatar and later returned to Barcelona, where he won the 2022-23 La Liga title before being replaced by Hansi Flick at the end of the following season.

As a player, Xavi enjoyed one of the most decorated careers in football history:

Dutch football director Nigel de Jong said Xavi’s experience under elite coaches and his commitment to proactive football matched the federation’s long-term vision.
The Netherlands want a team capable of controlling matches through possession while remaining tactically flexible at the highest level.
Can Xavi end The Netherlands’ trophy drought?
The Oranje remain one of international football’s great nearly-men. They have lost three World Cup finals and have not won a major tournament since Euro 1988.
Recent campaigns have included a semi-final defeat to England at Euro 2024 and another disappointing World Cup exit. Xavi’s challenge is not only to modernise the team but also to deliver the major trophy that has eluded the Netherlands for nearly four decades.
His success with Spain as a player helped transform a talented but underachieving national side into a dominant force. The Dutch federation is now hoping he can inspire a similar transformation from the dugout.
