Who is Marie-Louise Eta? Union Berlin’s history-making coach

Marie-Louise Eta has made history as the first woman to manage a men’s team in Europe’s top five leagues after taking charge of 1. FC Union Berlin on an interim basis. At just 34, her rise reflects a blend of elite playing experience, rapid coaching progression, and a consistent record of breaking new ground in football.
Early life and playing career
Born on 7 July 1991, Eta first made her mark as a player, featuring for clubs including Turbine Potsdam, Hamburger SV, BV Cloppenburg, and SV Werder Bremen.
Her most successful spell came at Turbine Potsdam, where she broke into the senior team at 17 and won the UEFA Women's Champions League in 2010. She was also part of the squad that secured three consecutive Bundesliga titles between 2009 and 2011.
Eta retired from professional football in 2018 at the age of 26, transitioning immediately into coaching.
Coaching Journey
Eta began her coaching career with Werder Bremen’s U15 boys’ team, before moving into the national setup as assistant coach for Germany’s U15 women’s side.
After earning her professional coaching licence from the German FA academy in Frankfurt, she progressed to work with Germany’s U17 team. Her breakthrough at club level came in 2023 when she joined Union Berlin’s academy coaching staff, quickly rising through the ranks.
Breaking barriers at Union Berlin
Eta has consistently made history at Union Berlin. She became the Bundesliga’s first female assistant coach in 2023 and later led the first team from the touchline during a league match in 2024.
Now, following the departure of Steffen Baumgart, she steps in as interim head coach of the senior men’s team. Despite the short-term nature of the role, the moment marks a major milestone in European football.
The Task Ahead
Union Berlin currently sit mid-table in the Bundesliga but are struggling for form, with just two wins in 14 league matches.
Eta’s immediate challenge is to stabilise performances and secure the club’s top-flight status before the end of the season.
What Happens Next?
Regardless of her interim spell, Eta is already set to become head coach of Union Berlin’s women’s team in the summer, highlighting the club’s long-term trust in her leadership.
Eta has consistently downplayed the significance of gender in her career, focusing instead on coaching quality and performance.
She once noted that what matters most is “the quality of the coach on and off the pitch,” a philosophy that has guided her steady rise.
