Union Berlin appoint Marie-Louise Eta as first female head coach

Union Berlin has made history by appointing Marie-Louise Eta as interim head coach, making her the first woman to manage a men’s team in one of Europe’s top five leagues. Eta, 34, takes charge until the end of the season following the dismissal of Steffen Baumgart.

Change comes after poor run

Union’s decision follows a disappointing 3-1 defeat to Heidenheim, with the team struggling for form in 2026. Despite sitting 11th in the Bundesliga, Union has won just two of their last 14 league matches and remain within reach of the relegation battle.

A Trailblazer in German Football

Eta is no stranger to breaking barriers. She previously became the Bundesliga’s first female assistant coach in 2023 and made history again in January 2024 by leading the team from the touchline during a league match.

A former youth international for Germany, she also won the Women’s Champions League with FFC Turbine Potsdam during her playing career.

Big task ahead

Union is currently seven points clear of St. Pauli, who occupy the relegation play-off spot, with five matches remaining. Eta acknowledged the challenge ahead but expressed confidence in the team’s ability to secure safety.

The appointment has been widely welcomed, with overwhelming backing from both supporters and within the club. Union’s leadership cited the need for a “fresh start” as they look to steady performances and secure their Bundesliga status.

Part of a wider shift

Eta’s milestone comes more than two decades after Carolina Morace became the first woman to manage a men’s professional team in Europe. More recently, Corinne Diacre and Hannah Dingley have also broken new ground in men’s football.

Marie-Louise Eta’s appointment marks a significant moment for football, highlighting gradual progress in opportunities for women at the highest level of the men’s game. All eyes will now be on Union Berlin as they look to finish the season strongly under her leadership.
