Spurs beat Hoffenheim 3-0 ahead of Premier League opener

Tottenham Hotspur continued their preparations for the new Premier League season with a convincing 3-0 victory over Hoffenheim at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday.

Richarlison opened the scoring late in the first half before academy graduate Mikey Moore took centre stage after the interval, scoring twice to complete a comfortable victory for Roberto De Zerbi's side.

The result provided plenty of encouragement ahead of Tottenham's opening Premier League fixture against Brentford, although the performance also highlighted defensive issues that could become more significant once the competitive season begins.

Richarlison gives Spurs the lead

Tottenham started with a strong lineup and looked to take control from the opening stages. Hoffenheim also created opportunities, but Spurs eventually broke the deadlock towards the end of the first half.

Andy Robertson produced one of the standout attacking moments of the opening period, delivering an excellent ball into the penalty area for Richarlison. The Brazilian striker reacted quickly, finishing first time to give Tottenham a 1-0 lead.

The goal once again highlighted one of Richarlison's biggest strengths: his movement inside the penalty area and ability to finish chances quickly.

Mikey Moore takes centre stage

The second half belonged to Mikey Moore. The Tottenham academy graduate looked increasingly dangerous in the final third, regularly attacking from the right and showing greater willingness to cut inside onto his left foot.

His first goal came after a clever run into the penalty area. Mathys Tel supplied the cutback and Moore arrived at the right moment to finish and double Tottenham's advantage.

Moore then completed his brace with another intelligent attacking movement. Tel was again involved, finding Moore inside the box before the youngster produced a composed first touch and finished through the defender's legs.

The brace capped an impressive individual performance and gave Tottenham supporters another glimpse of the teenager's potential.

Tel provides two assists

While Moore deserved the headlines, Mathys Tel also played an important role in the victory. The forward supplied assists for both of Moore's goals, demonstrating his ability to contribute from wider and more advanced positions.

His combination with Moore was one of the most encouraging aspects of Tottenham's attacking play. With the Premier League season approaching, De Zerbi will have to decide how best to use the pair as he finalises his attacking options.

Robertson impresses going forward

Andy Robertson continued to demonstrate why he can be such an important attacking outlet for Tottenham. The experienced left-back repeatedly looked for opportunities to deliver crosses into the penalty area, with his ball for Richarlison's opener standing out.

His defensive performances have been less convincing during pre-season, but his quality in the final third remains clear. Tottenham will need to find the right balance between allowing Robertson to attack and ensuring that his forward movement does not leave the defence exposed.

De Zerbi experiments with midfield

One of the most interesting tactical developments was Tottenham's use of Lucas Bergvall and Sandro Tonali in a flexible double-pivot system. Rather than having one midfielder permanently anchored, the pair regularly alternated between deeper and more advanced positions.

This gave Spurs greater flexibility during their build-up and allowed them to create passing options through the centre of the pitch.

However, the system was not perfect. Bergvall was occasionally beaten too easily through midfield, while Tottenham sometimes appeared vulnerable when possession was lost. De Zerbi will likely continue working on the structure before the Premier League opener.

Spurs show quality from deep

Tottenham also displayed impressive passing ability from the back. Marcos Senesi, making his first start for the club, combined with Jan Paul van Hecke and goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky to give Spurs several options during the build-up.

The trio regularly attempted to break Hoffenheim's defensive lines with forward passes into Richarlison and Conor Gallagher. When successful, those passes allowed Tottenham to attack quickly against a disorganised defence.

However, there were also moments when Spurs overplayed in dangerous areas, contributing to Hoffenheim's chances.

Defensive concerns remain

Despite the comfortable scoreline, Tottenham were not completely dominant. Hoffenheim created several good opportunities and could have scored, particularly through Adam Hlozek, who was unfortunate not to find the net.

There were also concerns about the positioning of Tottenham's defenders. Van Hecke sometimes struggled to judge when to step forward, Robertson was occasionally caught watching the ball, while Senesi's positioning could also be improved.

Those issues may not have been punished by Hoffenheim, but stronger Premier League opponents are likely to test them more severely.

Spurs missed another penalty opportunity

Tottenham also had a strong claim for another penalty during the match. Hoffenheim defender Vladimir Coufal appeared to make significant contact with Senesi inside the box while a corner was delivered.

The Tottenham players appealed for a spot kick, but the referee waved play on. It was another frustrating moment for Spurs, who have had several penalty decisions go against them during pre-season.

Tottenham's lineup was strong, but a number of important players remain unavailable or have yet to feature during pre-season. Pedro Porro had only recently returned following Spain's World Cup celebrations, while Rodrigo Bentancur, Micky van de Ven, Destiny Udogie and James Maddison had not featured at this stage.

The fitness situation surrounding those players will be closely monitored before Tottenham's Premier League opener.

Their return could significantly change De Zerbi's preferred starting XI. The 3-0 victory gives Tottenham plenty of positives to take from their final pre-season preparations.

Richarlison's finishing, Moore's breakthrough performance, Tel's creativity and the passing quality from the back all provide reasons for optimism. At the same time, Tottenham's defensive organisation and midfield balance remain areas that De Zerbi will need to address.

With the Premier League season approaching, the challenge now is to turn encouraging pre-season performances into competitive results.
