Senegal unveil 2026 World Cup squad with Mane, Koulibaly included

Senegal have announced a provisional 28-man squad for the FIFA World Cup 2026, with head coach Pape Thiaw leaning heavily on experience while also introducing a handful of emerging talents for the tournament in North America.

The Lions of Teranga are preparing for a demanding Group I campaign against France, Norway and Iraq as they seek another deep run on football's biggest stage.

At the centre of the squad is veteran forward Sadio Mane, who remains one of the most influential figures in Senegalese football. The forward missed the 2022 World Cup in Qatar through injury despite being selected, making this tournament an opportunity to finally play a leading role at football's global showpiece again.

Thiaw, who represented Senegal during their memorable quarter-final run at the 2002 World Cup, appears to have prioritised leadership and tournament experience. Alongside Mane are established figures including Kalidou Koulibaly, Idrissa Gueye and Edouard Mendy.

The squad also features several players currently competing at the highest levels of European football. Nicolas Jackson, Iliman Ndiaye, Ismaila Sarr and Pape Matar Sarr add energy and attacking quality to a team that will hope to strike a balance between physicality and pace.

There is also room for the next generation. Teenage prospects Ibrahim Mbaye and Bara Sapoko Ndiaye have been included, reflecting Senegal's long-term investment in youth development and the country's growing talent pipeline.

One of the major decisions still facing Thiaw is reducing the squad from 28 players to FIFA's final 26-man requirement before the submission deadline on June 2.

Key talking points from Senegal's squad

Senegal's squad suggests three clear priorities:

  • Tournament experience through senior leaders
  • Premier League and European-based players at the core of the team
  • Youth integration for long-term succession planning

With a squad blending proven performers and rising stars, Senegal will believe they possess enough quality to compete in one of the tournament's tougher groups.
