Neymar Inspires Santos Comeback Against Macará in Sudamericana

Santos came from behind to beat Macará 2-1 in the first leg of their Copa Sudamericana round-of-16 tie, with Neymar playing a decisive role in the comeback.

Santos overcame an early setback to secure a 2-1 victory over Macará in the first leg of their Copa Sudamericana round-of-16 tie on Thursday, August 13.

The Brazilian club fell behind inside the opening five minutes at Vila Belmiro but responded through Gabigol, who scored his 100th goal for Santos. Willian Arão then completed the comeback with his first goal for the club after another influential contribution from Neymar.

The result gives Santos a narrow advantage heading into the second leg in Ecuador.

Macará strike early against Santos

Santos were caught cold when Franco Posse put Macará ahead after only five minutes.

The hosts initially struggled to impose their technical quality on the game, while Macará looked capable of making life difficult for the Brazilian side.

Santos were also forced into two changes before half-time after Gabriel Menino and Bontempo suffered problems, adding to the difficulties faced by Cuca's team.

Despite the disrupted first half, Santos gradually grew into the contest, with Gabigol becoming increasingly influential in attack.

Gabigol reaches 100 Santos goals

Santos eventually found their equaliser through Gabigol, who reached a major personal milestone by scoring his 100th goal for the club.

Neymar played an important role in the move, providing the pass that allowed Gabigol to find the net.

The Brazilian No. 10 remained heavily involved after the equaliser, although he appeared to suffer discomfort around his left knee after slipping on the pitch.

Santos thought they had taken the lead again after the break when Gabigol found the net, but the goal was ruled out for offside.

Another Santos effort was also disallowed after Gabigol was again caught offside, despite Neymar providing the pass.

Neymar creates winning moment

With Santos continuing to push for a second goal, Neymar once again produced the decisive moment.

The forward delivered a corner that caught Macará's defence off guard, allowing Willian Arão to score and complete Santos' comeback.

The goal was particularly significant for Arão, as it was his first goal since joining Santos.

Santos ultimately had to settle for a one-goal advantage despite controlling much of the second half.

What Santos need in the second leg

Santos will travel to Estadio Bellavista for the second leg on August 20 with a 2-1 aggregate lead.

A draw would be enough for Santos to advance to the quarter-finals.

Macará, meanwhile, must win by at least two goals to qualify directly. A one-goal victory would take the tie to a penalty shootout.

The winner will face either Atlético Mineiro or Red Bull Bragantino in the next round.

Santos return to Brasileirão action

Before thinking about the second leg, Santos must turn their attention back to the Brazilian league.

The club are currently sitting just above the relegation zone and will face Vasco away from home on Sunday, August 16.

Vasco are also in the relegation battle, making the Brasileirão fixture an important encounter for Santos as they attempt to move away from danger.
